The Faculty Leadership Academy (FLA) is a joint effort of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and the University of Kansas Hospital. Its purpose is to help improve the management and leadership skills of physician and basic science faculty members. Attendees are nominated by their respective department chairs. The course of study for each attendee spans two academic years, with four “core” courses per year, each of which is a half-day in length. (Details)
The University of Kansas Women in Medicine & Science (WIMS) Organization is in alliance with GWIMS in medical schools across the country through its AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS) affiliation. GWIMS supports the growth and successful careers for physicians and basic scientists. Our representative with GWIMS is Dr. Julie Wei.
The mission of the GWIMS is to advance the full and successful participation of women in all roles within academic medicine, both physicians and basic scientists. The GWIMS serves as a national forum to advance women's success in medicine and science by addressing:
- gender equity
- recruitment and retention
- awards and recognition
- career advancement

Mid-Career Seminar
The Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar is a three and a half-day program designed for women primarily at the associate professor level. Women in the early stages of a professorial appointment will be considered on an individual basis.
The program goal is to enhance knowledge and skills needed to support progress along the path to leadership in academic medicine. The seminar covers skills related to the formation and use of teams, central to effective collaborative in various mission-critical activities. Leadership topics are organized into workshop tracks that span communication skills, institutional finance and management issues. Small-group sessions focus on mentoring participants in career building skills in narrative/CV development, and strategic thinking about career development.

Early Career Seminar
This three-day and a half day professional development seminar is designed for women at the assistant professor or instructor level. The program focuses on academic medicine career building and enhancing basic management, leadership, and communication skills.

The Hedwig Van Amerigen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine ( ELAM ) Program for Women is a national leadership training program aimed at preparing senior women faculty for the highest administrative ranks at academic health centers. ELAM is a core program of the Institute of Women 's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. Candidates must be at the associate professor rank or higher and have significant administrative responsibilities within their institution, with a strong potential for advancement.
