Target Audience

This program was designed for healthcare professionals who want to have a successful career in academic or private medicine or research; who want to overcome obstacles in their way of success; who want to overcome burnout and reinvigorate their career choice; and who want to connect and collaborate with others in the fields of medicine science in the Kansas City and surrounding areas.

180 faculty members in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Allied Health at the University of Kansas along with residents, fellows, post-docs, graduate students, medical students and other healthcare personnel participated in the event. Fifteen faculty and other guests attended from Children's Mercy Hospital, KCUMB, Truman Medical Center and private KC medical practices.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of this conference participants should be able to:

  1. Apply networking, mentoring, and leadership skills to lead to career success and avoid burnout (in the medical field).
  2. Establish key components necessary to achieve effective communication as a leader and for specific challenging situations.
  3. Identify and overcome challenges and approaches to achieving life balance.
  4. Employ crucial conflict resolution and negotiation skills to efficiently and successfully navigate the dynamic environment of academic medicine.
  5. Experience greater satisfaction with ones career in the medical field.

Sponsored by KU Women in Science & Medicine (WIMS), the Joy McCann Professorship Funds, SOM Office of Professional Development and Faculty Affairs and Continuing Education and the University of Kansas School of Medicine

Support for the KU Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS) organization comes from the KU School of Medicine state budget and the Joy McCann Professorship. Both budgets a limited in what they can provided. To maintain a beneficial and fully supportive series of programs for 250-300 women faculty members in the School of Medicine, plus expand into programs for our colleagues in the Schools of Nursing and Allied Health, plus the young woman residents, fellows, post-docs and medical students funding for infra-structure as well as programs is sorely needed.

The only way our Organization will survive in this current economy is through the support of those who believe in our mission. No contribution is too small and all contributions are greatly appreciated. Conferences like the one above will not be possible in the future without additional funding.
