Susan E. Carlson, Ph.D. March of Dimes Agnes Higgins Awardee, The Agnes Higgins Award is presented in recognition of distinguished achievement in research, education or clinical services in the field of maternal-fetal nutrition. Recipient of the AJ Rice Professorship to study nutritional supplements for pregnant women that benefit fetuses and infants. The Rice Professorship at KUMC will support a large clinical trial of infant docosahexanenoic acid, or DHA, supplementation. Local organizer for the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids meeting held in Kansas City in May 2008, only the second time the meeting has been held in the US. Recipient of an NIH R21 grant.Principal Investigator, ‘Quantitative in vivo biomarkers of oxidative stress in diabetes’. The goals of this study are to develop and characterize direct, objective in vivo biomarkers of oxidative stress occurring in diabetes mellitus. |
