Microsoft Debuts Pocket PC For Handhelds
Microsoft Debuts Pocket PC For Handhelds By John Ruley, Byte. Last month, I reported that Microsoft would replace the CE 2.x-based Palm-sized PC (P/PC) with a new CE 3.0-based version called Pocket PC; and I discussed two new applications that would debut on the new platform, namely CE versions of Microsoft's Reader e-book software and Windows Media Player. I've been beta testing the new software using updated ROMs in two P/PCs (a Compaq Aero 2140 and an HP Jornada 430). Pocket PC Pro devices will also have Pocket Word and Pocket Excel, which were previously available only on the larger CE 2.x-based handheld PC (H/PC) devices that have keyboards.

A Look Back, and a Look Ahead
The first generations of Windows CE-based devices were labeled PC companions because they relied heavily on "host" PCs for applications and data. The functions at which pocket PCs excel start with PIM management and synchronization (including new software for exchanging data with Palm devices) and end at video and audio capture and playback. But neither model is a mainstream product on the scale of Palm or Pocket PC devices. Palm, no; Pocket PC, yes.

Two for Starters, More to Come
As of today's Pocket PC launch, only two Palm-size PCs are available: the Casio Cassiopeia E-115 ($600 street) and the HP Jornada 545 ($500 street) from Hewlett-Packard. The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC ($500 street), along with additional models from Casio and Hewlett-Packard, should all be available by early summer. The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC ($500 street) was not available in time for testing, but we did get a sneak peek at the product, which is a significant departure from Compaq's previous Aero Palm-size PC line. A CompactFlash Expansion Pack ($40 street) and a PC Card Expansion Pack ($150 street), each with a single Type II slot for their respective card types, should be available when the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC ships (with a $30 Expansion Pack coupon in the box).

Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC
Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC Now that we've seen the iPAQ, we recommend it over Casio and HP Pocket PC models. The Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC ($500 street) is noteworthy for five reasons: flexible expansion options (at the expense of a standard expansion slot, though), style, a speedy (206 MHz) Intel processor, a great screen, and value. The iPAQ has no CompactFlash expansion slot, unlike previous Compaq palm-size models and the currently shipping Casio and HP Pocket PCs. HP beats Casio in Pocket PC debuts
With sparer interfaces and fresh functionality courtesy of Microsoft Corp.'s new Pocket PC operating system, Hewlett-Packard Co.'s Jornada 545 and Casio Inc.'s Cassiopeia E-115 offer customers in the market for handheld devices compelling alternatives to Palm OS-based devices. In addition, the menu and settings software with which HP bolsters the Jornada help fill usability gaps that remain in the Pocket PC interface in a way that the Cassiopeia's included applications do not. However, for users in a position to take advantage of Internet and office productivity applications, we'd choose the Jornada over the Cassiopeia and Palm without hesitation. The Jornada's battery life nearly matches that of Palm Inc.'s Palm IIIc and exceeds that of previous HP handhelds.

Microsoft has big plans for Pocket PC and its other mobile toys. The launch of Microsoft's Pocket PC in April grabbed lots of headlines. But while Pocket PCs from Casio, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard look flashy, it's all the extras that go into these mobile solutions -- the accessories, software, and services only now starting to trickle onto the market -- that will reveal the potential of the platform. Finally, if you've been hesitant to try a Pocket PC because your whole life is tied up in a Palm Organizer, Microsoft wants you.

Why Symbian beat out Palm, Pocket PC
Sony's choice of Symbian -- instead of the Palm or Pocket PC OSes -- as its software partner for wireless was all about smartphones, and getting into the market quickly. The reasoning was simple: Symbian offered a ready-made product that would help Sony ship millions of units per week. Rivals Palm (Nasdaq: PALM) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) have been focusing their attention on the PDA market, which has shipped about 20 million units -- total -- thus far. Palms Future is in its own hands
It has licensed the Palm OS to several of the world's top mobile electronics manufacturers, including IBM, Motorola, Nokia, Qualcomm and Sony. But Palm OS developers also include enterprise computing software vendors that are looking to extend their applications to mobile Palm-based devices. And Palm has an agreement with AOL, an investor in Palm, to provide access to AOL e-mail from Palm devices. According to its regulatory filings, less than 1 percent of Palm's revenue comes from licensing the Palm OS or wireless Internet subscriptions to Palm.

PC Week Labs examines how remedies might affect products future
Microsoft's application development tools have reinforced the "applications barrier to entry," a major plank in Judge Jackson's findings of fact in the antitrust suit that now enters its remedy phase. For example, Microsoft originally planned Visual Basic as a dual-platform tool for Windows and OS/2, but Microsoft dropped OS/2 support, undercutting interest in that platform. Microsoft has always used its BackOffice suite of products to tie its customers to the Windows NT platform. Microsoft's Internet applications, especially Internet Explorer, probably caused the most damage to the company in its battle against the government.

Sony sets launch date for handhelds
TOKYO -- Sony Corp said on Thursday it would launch two new handheld computers in Japan on September 9 and in the U.S. market later this year, joining the fray in an increasingly competitive global market. The devices use application software developed by Palm Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM), which struck a licensing agreement with Sony last year. Along with the PlayStation home game console, digital television set-top boxes and the Vaio personal computer, mobile computing is considered a strategic piece of Sony's drive to lead the development of home digital networks that link digital televisions, set-top boxes and other devices. The market for handheld computers in the United States is estimated at some three million to four million units, followed by Europe's two million to three million.
