Physiologic classification of systolic murmurs (Morton Tavel)
- Murmurs are classified as ejection or regurgitant (rather than early, mid, mid to late, late).
- Classification is simple and clinically applicable.
- Auditory perception is not the same as acoustic recording (eg "diamond"-shaped recording is often not perceived as such).
- With the disappearance of clinical phonocardiography, descriptive classification is more difficult to document, verify and teach.
