Sedation

Many patients require no sedation for diagnostic procedures

• If interventions are to be carried out shortly after the diagnostic portion of the procedure, a non-sedated patient may better understand changes to the risk-benefit analysis made prior to the diagnostic study.
• Light to moderate sedation is appropriate for longer diagnostic procedures and interventions.

Common regimens

• Versed, 1 to 2 mg intravenously immediately prior to the procedure.
• Demerol, 25 to 50 mg and Phenergan 12.5 to 25 mg intravenously immediately prior to the procedure.
