Echocardography of patients after diet pill use
Drugs in question:
- Fenfluramine
- Dexfenfluramine
- Fenfluramine-phenteramine
- Dexfenfluramine-phenteramine.
Doppler echocardiography is recommended (ACC/AHA):
- Patients with symptoms, murmurs, abnormal cardiac findings, or body habitus that precludes good auscultation.
Doppler echocardiography is not recommended (ACC/AHA):
- Evaluation of Grade 2 or softer midsystolic murmur that an experienced physician has called functional.
- To detect “silent” mitral or aortic regurgitation for purposes of endocarditis prophylaxis.
- To evaluate symptoms or signs of noncardiac disease with an isolated innocent midsystolic murmur
- To evaluate asymptomatic patients who have taken anorectic drugs and who can be adequately auscultated and have no murmur or other cardiac abnormality.
