top Urologic problems which affect females require a special approach to diagnosis and management. Urinary incontinence a common and often debilitating problem is a common problem treated by the urologists at the University of Kansas Hospital. There are several different types of incontinence, each requiring a unique approach to treatment. Dr. Tomas Griebling, the only fellowship trained female and geriatric urologist in Kansas City, offers the latest techniques in the diagnosis and management of difficult female urologic problems. Furthermore, with ongoing research, Dr. Griebling continues to search for more effective ways to manage complicated urologic problems in females and the elderly.

Incontinence occurs in many forms. For example there is “stress incontinence” which usually occurs with increases in abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing, or laughing. Another type of incontinence is “urge incontinence” which is the inability to hold the urine once the urge occurs. Many times the type of incontinence is not straightforward and may require special diagnostic testing. In the Department of Urology at the University of Kansas Hospital, we offer the latest equipment used in diagnosing incontinence and other problems of the bladder. Our Video Urodynamic Facility is “state of the art” equipment to provide specific information about even the most complicated conditions of the bladder. In addition, Dr. Griebling has specialized training in interpreting the results of such testing ensuring the patient of the proper management of their condition.

Our specialists are experienced in all forms of effective treatment for incontinence and other female urologic conditions ranging from biofeedback and medication to surgery. Dr. Griebling is experienced in the treatment of both simple and complex urinary problems including patients who have failed previous treatments elsewhere. Our surgeons use a wide variety of cutting-edge techniques such as urodynamics, biofeedback, periurethral injection therapy, nerve stimulator implants, and innovative drug combinations for evaluation and management of incontinence and interstitial cystitis syndrome. If surgical reconstruction is necessary our surgeons specialize in the repair of lower urinary tract abnormalities such as genitourinary fistulae, urethral diverticula and complex pelvic prolapse. In addition, our physicians employ a wide variety of procedures for stress urinary incontinence including sling procedures.

Dr. Griebling has also been a pioneer in the area of implants for sacral nerve stimulation which provides effective treatment to many of those patients who have failed all other forms of therapy for incontinence, pelvic pain, and bladder dysfunction. Interstitial cystitis, an inflammatory condition of the bladder, is often a disabling condition, but in some cases may be treated with sacral nerve stimulation.
