Through a variety of funding mechanisms, KUCTT has several clinical, educational, and research projects that support health care in Kansas. Whether in urban, rural, or frontier regions, these programs provide health care across the lifespan to underserved Kansas residents.
In addition to clinical consultations, KUCTT is investigating the use of technology in the home to assist chronically ill older Kansans to live at home and manage health issues that otherwise might require admission to a hospital or nursing home. Partnering with local home care providers, KUCTT has been able to demonstrate that daily monitoring of health indicators such as blood pressure, pulse, weight and blood glucose can enable people to better manage their illnesses and reduce costs related to Emergency Room visits and hospitalizations.
Home telehealth does not just measure vital signs, but also allows health care professionals additional opportunity to educate patients in health and wellness techniques specific to their condition. Many of the home monitoring systems in use today are not only utilizing advancements in miniaturization and wireless technology, but have two-way video and audio capabilities that can be programmed to transmit an appropriate message in response to specific health measurements.
