If your child becomes sick at school and the school nurse thinks he/she needs to see a doctor, the nurse can arrange for your child to see a doctor through TeleKidcare®. The school nurse will be present during the visit to explain your child’s symptoms to the doctor. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the visit, if possible. For medical concerns, your child can typically be seen within 24 hours. For behavioral concerns, your child can typically be seen within 3-5 weeks.
The best way to obtain TeleKidcare® services for your community is to submit a complete Request for Proposal (RFP) application for the Kansas TeleKidcare® Expansion project. The RFPs are generally due December 1 of each year. The RFPs do not require a lengthy narrative, however strong community support and vision must be apparent Once a community’s submitted application is selected for funding, staff from the KUCTT will work closely with the community members, school district personnel, and local health care providers to organize and establish the project.
The statewide expansion of TeleKidcare® has
been generously supported by the Kansas legislature and the Kansas Children’s
Cabinet since 2000. With the funds allocated to this project, successful
RFP applicants will receive all necessary equipment, training, and support
to launch a program in their community. In addition, the funding covers
all costs associated with telecommunication connectivity for the first
two full years of service.
Doctors can diagnose ear, nose, and throat (ENT) problems, minor eye infections, common skin irritations, and asthma. Furthermore, doctors can diagnose behavioral problems like ADHD or depression.
The primary goal and focus is to connect communities with local providers. Once the technology has been installed in the local provider’s clinic, the provider does have the capability to connect with a specialist at KU Med Center for a physician-to-physician consultation or to refer a local patient for specialized services.
Currently, there is no cost for your child to use TeleKidcare. A billing system for the project will be in place within the next couple of years.
