Weesam Alkhatib, MD

John H. Ashcraft, DO, MS
Graduated from Missouri State University in 1997 with BS in Biology & Chemistry.  Went on to complete a Masters in Physiology from MSU in 1998.  Received his DO from University of Health Sciences Kansas City in 2002.  Dr. Ashcraft is married with 1 child.  Future plans include seeking a Fellowship in Colorectal Surgery and eventually entering private practice in the Kansas City area.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to e-mail: jashcraft@kumc.edu

Mark Birdsong, MD
Graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with minors in Math and Chemistry.  He stayed at OU for medical school, matriculating in 2003.  After he completes his general surgery residency, he plans to practice general surgery in the Midwest.  Dr. Birdsong is married with two children, enjoys rebuilding classic muscle cars and playing basketball.

Matt Ostrowitz, MD
Graduated from Emory University with a double major in Chemistry and French.  Dr Ostrowitz then went on to medical school at the State University of New York-Downstate in Brooklyn.  After completing residency, he plans to go on to a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to e-mail:  mostrowitz@kumc.edu

James Howard, MD

Stewart Curtsinger, MD
Graduated from Morehead State University with a BS in Biology in 1998.  He went on to complete his MD from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 2002.  After his first three years of training, Dr. Curtsinger decided to transfer to KU Surgery to complete his training.  That opportunity arose when one of our categorical residents went off for a two-year research fellowship.  We are glad to have Dr. Curtsinger with us and look forward to great things from him.

Benjamin Stone, MD

Paul C. Teget, DO
Graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1991 with a BA in History and Philosophy.  Spent 6 years after college as an operations manager for a towboat company.  He returned to school and completed his DO in 2004 from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Dr. Teget is married with one son, he plans to enter private practice General Surgery following the completion of his Residency.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to e-mail: pteget@kumc.edu

Travis Abicht, MD

Brandon Cunningham, MD

Peter J. DiPasco, MD
Graduated from the 6 year University of  Missouri, Kansas City with a combined BA/MD program with a BA in Liberal Arts in 2004.  After a one-year research fellowship in sepsis at Washington University, St. Louis Dr. DiPasco started his residency at the University of Kansas.  Dr. DiPasco is married.  Presently, Dr. DiPasco is considering a Vascular Fellowship after the completion of his residency.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to e-mail: pdipasco@kumc.edu

Colleen S. Hupp, DO

Alfred Casillan, MD, PhD

Bobbi Fishinghawk, MD

Carissa Garey, MD
Graduated from Kansas State University in 2000 with a degree in Dietetics.  Went on to complete her MD from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2005.  Initially, Dr. Garey went into Pediatrics and after two years of training decided to change her focus and pursue her true interest in Surgery.  She has now joined the Surgical Residency as a PGY-2 and plans to follow her General Surgery training with a fellowship in Pediatric Surgery.  If you would like to contact with questions fell free to e-mail: cgarey@kumc.edu

Jennifer McAllaster, MD
Graduated from University of Kansas with a BA in Human Biology in 2002, and then went on to finish her MD at the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 2006.  She really enjoys watching her beloved ’Hawks play “hoops” with her fiancé (soon to become hubby).  Dr. McAllaster is strongly considering pursuing a Fellowship in either Plastic surgery or Surgical Oncology after the completion of her Residency.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to e-mail: jmcallaster@kumc.edu

 

PGY-1 (the Interns)

Stephanie Cohen, MD
Graduated from Saint Louis University in 2001 with a “double” of a BS in Biology and a BA in Chemistry.  Afterward, Dr. Cohen completed her Masters in Biology at SLU in 2003.  When she still wasn’t satisfied, Dr. Cohen went off to Indiana University and finished her MD in 2007.  After joining the University of Kansas General Surgery program, she has decided to pursue a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology and fully intendeds on staying in Academic Medicine after completion.  She wanted to share that “Surgery is, by far, the coolest thing in Medicine and I’m glad to be here in KU Surgery.  That being said, if I’m still my shiny, happy self at the end of my intern year, I was definitely not flogged enough, and am extremely happy about it.”.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to e-mail: scohen@kumc.edu

Christian Jones, MD
Graduated from Harvey Mudd College in 1999 with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics.  After completing his Bachelors, Dr. Jones went on to the University of Florida and received his Masters in Mathematics in 2001.  In 2007, Dr. Jones was awarded his MD from the University of Southern California.  He is planning to specialize in Trauma/Critical Care/Acute Care Surgery after finishing his General Surgery training.  Dr. Jones considers himself a slight “late-comer” to Surgery after previous careers in Mathematics and Computer Science, but he is looking to combine the science and logical methodology with the reward of treating acutely ill and injured patients.  If you would like to contact with questions feel free to email: cjones2@kumc.edu 

Scott Mullen, MD

Brendt Spears, MD
