Benefits for the Resident in General Surgery

Health Insurance:

Each resident is an employee of the State of Kansas and is therefore eligible for state health insurance.  The insurance is subsidized by the state and premiums for family/dependants is reimbursed.

Parking:

Each resident is provided a “red lot” parking permit by the department.

Library:

The Department of Surgery pays for each residents yearly library fees.

Loupes Allowance:

Incoming residents starting 7/2011 will get $1,000 to go toward Loupes in their PGY 2 year.

Licensure:

The Department pays for each residents temporary license to practice as a member of the University Housestaff  and for their DEA license.

Vacation:

Each resident receives 3 weeks of paid vacation each year.

Lab Coats/Scrubs:

The Department provides 3 new lab coats per resident with the department and their name embroidered on them.  The hospital has made scrubs available to all surgery residents with your ID badge.

Trips:

During the Chief year, the department will reimburse expenses for each Chief to attend a professional meeting of choice with approval from the Program Director and Chair (up to $1000).

At any time during residency, if a resident has a scientific paper accepted for presentation at a national meeting, the Department will reimburse expenses upon approval from the PD and Chair.  There may be time away restrictions and a monetary cap.
