EMIG is a group that is looking to further the awareness and interest of Emergency Medicine on this campus. Currently, development and design of an ER residency program at KUMC is underway. We are now sitting at a critical point in time, waiting for the decision about whether an ER residency will be offered soon or if it will be several more years down the road. Therefore, it is the goal of EMIG to increase this interest in Emergency Medicine at KU to influence this decision by involving as many students as possible in the following events.

Night with Needles- IV starts, blood draws
Basic Life Support (BLS) classes for those who need CPR
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)classes (spring)

In addition we also are working with the KCK Fire Department to establish ambulance ride-alongs for students.

EMIG is also involved in community service through a chilifeed and the KU street fair. The Chilifeed event is a fund raiser for charities. We hope to raise as much money as possible for them. Dr. Pamela Ramsey, the President of the Kansas Chapter of the American Emergency Physician Socieity has offered to help with many activities, helped raise funds for EMIG and offer invaluable advice to many people interested in Emergency Medicine.

This year we plan on having several speakers; Dr. Lisbon, a KU ER physician who is working hard to develop a future KU ER residency program, the Truman ER residency director, and 4th year medical students that matched into an ER residency.

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group here at the University of Kansas Medical Center is fairly new. Our objective is to provide information and skills to students interested in pursuing the specialty of emergency medicine. With the support of Dr. Deborah Powell, Executive Dean of the Medical School, and Dr. Donald Hagen, Executive vice Chancellor, we are working very hard to achieve Academic Department status for KUMC's Emergency Department and ultimately to obtain an EMed Residency Program here.
