COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Nursing practice in an evolving health care system is addressed as well as
the implications of a managed care environment on health care delivery. The role
of the nurse as leader and manager of a health care team is examined using
concepts and theories of organization, management, leadership, change, decision
making, and group process. Findings of current research related to nursing
management and leadership are discussed. Historical, political, economic,
social, and cultural factors that affect health care delivery within an
organization are considered.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Examine the effects of organizational design, leadership style, and basic
management functions on health care delivery.
- Relate decision making models to patient care, unit management, and the
structure of an organization.
- Analyze the political, economic, social, and cultural factors that affect
health care delivery in an organization.
- Identify options for the potential resolution of legal and ethical issues
related to the management of client care.
- Describe strategies for effective change in individuals, organizations and
the profession.
- Use group process, team building skills, professional and organizational
standards, and current research to achieve consumer outcomes.
- Discuss processes used to assess and maintain patient care quality,
development of staff and performance evaluation.
