NURS 438 Population Based Health Care for the Professional Nurse: Clinical Laboratory
Challenge Exam Guidelines

  1. The student must be a currently licensed to practice as a registered nurse, hold current affirmation card for BLS, and admitted to the RN completion program.

  2. The student initiates the challenge exam process by contacting Jeanne Schott, the RN advisor for the online baccalaureate nursing program, at 913-588-1625 or e-mailing her at jschott@kumc.edu.

  3. The student completes the appropriate eligibility form (available here in Acrobat PDF format) and sends it to the appropriate Assistant Dean for review.

  4. The Assistant Dean informs the student in writing (letter or email), with a copy to Linda Deneke in the Office of Academic Affairs, of his or her eligibility (or ineligibility) to take the challenge exam.

  5. After receiving written approval from the appropriate Assistant Dean, the student informs Linda Deneke by writing to her at :

  6. The student must submit a posting fee of $12.50 per course prior to taking the challenge exam. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the University of Kansas School of Nursing and sent to Linda Deneke at the above address. In the event that the student is unsuccessful, this fee will be returned to the student.

  7. The student may challenge NURS 438 only one time. The challenge exam is pass/fail. The minimum passing score is 80%. NURS 437 may not be challenged.

  8. The challenge exam for N438 is completion of a Population Based Assessment and Care Plan for a selected population aggregate, submitted as a formal paper (typically 5-10 pages). The project includes identification of a population of interest, assessment of biophysical, psychological, physical, socio-cultural, behavioral, and health system factors influencing the health of the population, determination of population health strengths and weaknesses, and formulation of a nursing care plan addressing a priority health need of the population. Employment related experiences in population based nursing care may be used as the focus for the assignment.

  9. The student will submit a 1-2 paragraph summary describing the population they intend to focus on for the project to the lead teacher for approval. Pending approval, the student will have 3 weeks to complete and submit the paper (by mail, fax, or electronically) to the lead teacher.   10. The student will be notified of the results in a letter from the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs approximately four (4) weeks after the completed exam is received. If a passing score is achieved, credit will be posted to the student's permanent record.

  11. The student is reminded of the PROFITS Pledge: "I pledge that I will not give, receive, or tolerate unauthorized aid, nor will I abuse academic resources while I am a member of this academic community."
