SPOTLIGHT ON DELTA CHAPTER

GRANT AWARDS

Carol E. Smith, RN PhD, was awarded a $2.1 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health-National Institute of Nursing Research, to find out what it takes to improve patients’ adherence to the treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. An estimated 18 million people live with obstructive sleep apnea in the United States, yet many of them do not follow the most effective and commonly prescribed treatment of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), which requires nightly mechanical ventilation.

Smith’s new study will examine the cost benefit and effectiveness of a comprehensive, stepped intervention program on adherence to CPAP and on improvements in health and quality of life. The first level, which includes self-directed and focused counseling, is followed by in-home two-way telehealth monitoring that allows a nurse to direct CPAP care and assess physical and emotional barriers to adherence. The third and final level takes the use of communication technology to the Internet. It involves an innovative Internet interaction that allows patients and family members to connect to support persons managing CPAP and other health-related lifestyle changes. Patients will be introduced to the intervention steps only if they are not adhering to the prescribed CPAP treatment.
