Admission Criteria and Process (for all RNs)

A primary responsibility of the University of Kansas School of Nursing is to offer a program of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The school endeavors to fulfill its responsibilities to the changing needs of society by selecting applicants who, in the judgment of the Student Admission and Progression Committee, demonstrate the academic achievement, maturity, integrity and motivation necessary for the successful study and practice of nursing, and who will best meet the needs of the citizenry. In addition, the committee looks for applicants who will contribute academic, nonacademic and socioeconomic diversity to the class.

To complete the admission process the following is required:

  1. Completion of all parts of the admission application, according to the instructions of the application packet, by the deadline appropriate for your anticipated start date. The following deadlines should be observed: October 1 for spring semester admission; March 1 for summer session admission; June 1 for fall semester admission.
  2. Completion of 62 credit hours of required and elective liberal arts and sciences courses prior to the date of initial enrollment in the School of Nursing. [Note: the undergraduate statistics prerequisite is not required for those seeking admission to the RN to MS program.]
  3. Minimum of 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in prerequisite college course work. RNs applying for the RN to MS program must have a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average.
  4. Documentation of personal and scholastic aptitude as evidenced by: personal statement of interest and commitment to nursing, 3 references, extracurricular, volunteer or community activities, personal characteristics, and nursing work experience.
