Dear KU School of Nursing Leadership Student,
As you begin planning for your practicum/residency courses, we want to review with you the procedure for preceptor selection for your practicum/residency experiences. Students and faculty collaborate in determining an appropriate practicum/residency site for all practicum/residency courses. While each leadership student is responsible for identifying a preceptor that they would like to work with for each practicum/residency course, it is essential that the student involve the assigned faculty member in this process.
More specifically, approximately three months prior to the beginning of the semester in which you plan to enroll in your practicum/residency course, contact the faculty member for the respective course and indicate that you would like to take the course in the following semester. Faculty contact information for the respective courses are listed on http://nursing.kumc.edu/preceptor/grad/preceptor_faculty.html . The faculty member will forward you the syllabus, and any preceptor selection guidelines for the particular course.
Most leadership practicum/residency courses have course objectives that are then customized to individual learning outcomes by the individual student and faculty member. As this process takes some time to complete, it is helpful to begin that process in the semester prior to enrolling for one of these practicum experiences.
If you have questions about how to plan for and enroll in a leadership practicum or residency experience, please email me at dford@kumc.edu.
Best wishes,
Debbie Ford, PhD
