Melinda Krautmann has a variety of experience with all age groups in a multiple settings in direct patient care, in advocacy for patients and families, and in patient education.
After receiving her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Missouri, Melinda Krautmann became a visiting nurse in Rota, Spain, where she taught childbirth, infant care and breastfeeding classes, conducted support groups, and made home visits to new mothers and infants. Upon returning to the U.S., Melinda worked as a staff nurse at hospitals, outpatient clinics, and with the American Red Cross.
After earning her Masters in Health Education, she provided bilingual diabetes education (English/ Spanish) at Scott & White Clinic in College Station, TX. Later became program manager for an outpatient rehabilitation center and director of nurses for a community based family practice residency program.
In 2002 she came to Kansas as a Care Coordinator at the Assessment Center of Saint Luke’s South in Overland Park. Krautmann’s private business, Options for Health, L.L.C., provides advocacy, health coaching, and chronic disease self-management education.
As Outreach Coordinator for the Community Health Council of Wyandotte County, Krautmann helped improve access to primary health care, enhanced health maintenance, and coordinated the development of community health resources for people with diabetes in Wyandotte County. She recruited and mentored 16 Faith Community Nurses and Lay Health Advisors in diabetes prevention and early intervention initiatives in Wyandotte County. Krautmann also provided clinical education to undergraduate nursing students in Populations.
Krautmann developed and currently implements a bilingual (English and Spanish) Healthy Lifestyles program at Bethel Neighborhood Center in Kansas City, KS, providing nutrition education, health promotion, and Tai Chi exercise classes weekly. She provides patient education for Silver City Health Center where she teaches diabetes self-management education, smoking cessation, and leadership with culturally and literacy appropriate patient education materials. She also coordinates community outreach activities for KU HealthPartners, Inc.
Krautmann serves on the health advisory committee for the Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, KS, and for the Center for Practical Bioethics’ KC4 Aging in Community program. She is active with state and local initiatives to improve health care for people with diabetes.
