With grants from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense, Janet Pierce, RN, DSN, associate professor, is studying the mechanisms surrounding how the diaphragm functions in humans. Having recently completed a study that looked at the direct measurement of diaphragm fatigue, Dr. Pierce is now looking at the effects of dopamine on diaphragm fatigue. In recognition of her research efforts, Dr. Pierce was awarded the School of Nursing's investigation research award in 1995.

Her teaching talents also have been honored multiple times. She was elected outstanding undergraduate nursing instructor by the School of Nursing students for two consecutive years and, in 1998, was presented the University of Kansas Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Classroom Teacher.

Dr. Pierce's teaching is not limited to the traditional classroom at the School of Nursing. Working through the KU Medical Center's Virtual Classroom, Dr. Pierce has gone high-tech by teaching courses via interactive television and the Internet. In conjunction with a trip to the Third Nursing Academic International Congress in Canberra, Australia, Dr. Pierce also spent a month as a visiting professor at the University of Canberra.

Dr. Pierce is a member of the planning committee for the workshop on pulmonary rehabilitation sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

A nursing school graduate from the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Pierce completed her masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed her postdoctoral training at the Medical College of Virginia. In addition to her academic responsibilities at the School of Nursing, Dr. Pierce also maintains a position as commander in the United States Naval Reserves.
