An associate professor at the KU School of Nursing, Leonie Pallikkathayil, RN, DNS, has focused much of her academic and research efforts on fatigue, suicide, and self destructive behaviors. Dr. Pallikkathayil recently completed a National Institutes of Health funded grant, entitled, "Experience of fatigue in healthy individuals" and a NIH and Research Institute funded study, the experience of Kansas University Medical Center Research participation. This study was part of NIH funded, Enhancement of KUMC Research Protection grant. Her current research is about chronic mental illness and is at the publication phase. She currently serves as a consultant to three different research studies.

Dr. Pallikkathayil, who has had numerous articles published on mental health and ethics topics, has supervised multiple master's theses and doctoral dissertations. In 1991, her dedication and enthusiasm for teaching was recognized with the University of Kansas Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Professorship. In 2003, she was awarded the Phyllis Keeney Lawrence Teaching Award. In 2007 she was awarded the Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence.
