In a teaching career that spans more than 35 years, Sandra Hanson has always encouraged and helped nursing students to take pride in their work and skills. Dedicated to both the academic and professional growth of nursing students at KU, Hanson works with students and graduates outside the classroom and clinical setting to help them expand their critical thinking skills. Her commitment to students also is evident through her sponsorship of the Association of Undergraduate Students in Nursing and the KU Student Nurses Association.
With an interest in children’s healthcare, Hanson has expanded clinical experience for nursing students in a variety of settings including specialty camps and centers for children with chronic health problems. She has also helped students find community observational and participation experiences with children who have special needs.
Hanson is currently involved in a NINR funded research project, headed up by Professor Phoebe Williams, that is looking at ways to help children increase their knowledge and deal with the emotional stress of having siblings with chronic illness. She recently collaborated with Williams and several KU pediatric clinical nurse specialists on several articles that were published in Pediatric Nursing, the Journal of the Society of Pediatric Nurses, and Children’s Health Care.
Hanson is a member and Bylaws Chair of Sigma Theta Tau International-Delta Chapter, a contributing member and former officer of the KU Nurses Alumni Association, as well as a member and Bylaws Chair of the local Association of Pediatric Oncology Nurses Chapter.
