On faculty since 1975, associate professor, Edna K. Hamera has expanded her traditional teaching role, to include several web-based graduate courses including Psychiatric Assessment for Advanced Nursing Practice and Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing I: Short Term Illness. In addition she practices at an indigent clinic and mental health center as an advanced practice nurse.

In her research role, Hamera is collaborating with colleagues in the KU School of Allied Health to address independent living skill training in individuals with schizophrenia. En route to their ultimate goal of helping these individuals successfully negotiate grocery stores and other complex environments, the research team has developed a way to test the effectiveness of a grocery shopping skills intervention for persons with schizophrenia. Data from a multi-site study evaluating a skills training program to improve grocery shopping skills and to identify cognitive predictors of success is being analyzed.
