With the rapid aging of our population, there are many questions about the elderly and health care. Sarah Forbes-Thompson, RN, PhD, assistant professor, is searching for those answers. Dr. Forbes-Thompson’s research focuses on issues surrounding long term care services and end of life care. A literature search for end of life care for elders resulted in a grant proposal for further research on the subject. Her dedication to improving healthcare for the elderly resulted in the "Career Development Award Center on Aging" in 1997 from the Center on Aging at KU Medical Center.
As a nurse educator, Dr. Forbes-Thompson has taught both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including a graduate level Internet-based course. In addition to assisting in the development of the Internet-based course, she also has developed a population-based healthcare course for students in both the traditional baccalaureate program and the RN-BSN degree completion program. She is a member of several professional organizations including the American Nurses Association, the Gerontological Society of America, the National Hospice Organization, the Midwest Nursing Research Society, and Sigma Theta Tau International, where she serves on the Eligibility Committee. Dr. Forbes-Thompson is also a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Nursing Measurement.
