Wanda Blaser Bonnel, RN, PhD, ARNP is a specialist in geriatrics and nursing education. She has recently been funded as the project investigator for the HRSA Division of Nursing grant, "Blended Nurse Educator Specialty & Clinical APN Masters." Under this grant, she and colleagues have developed and implemented a Nurse Educator Certificate Program which consists of 4 web-based courses and practicum. This certificate program received the 2004 Sigma Theta Tau Regional Pinnacle Award for Computer-Based Professional Education Technology. Additional grant funds were acquired to extend this program to the current Health Professions Educator Certificate. Additionally she has received HRSA funding to implement a Career Ladder grant using E-mentoring and online coursework.
Certified as a gerontological nurse practitioner, Dr. Bonnel additionally teaches clinical courses for the KU School of Nursing Adult-Gerontological advanced practice nurse program. As both educator and clinician, Dr. Bonnel plays an integral role in preparing future health care professionals for the changing world of health care.
In addition to developing and teaching online courses via the KU School of Nursing Virtual Classroom, Dr. Bonnel has published and given presentations on Internet course development. Examples include "Blended Roles: Preparing the Advanced Practice Nurse Educator/Clinician with a Web-Based Nurse Educator Certificate Program" in the Journal of Professional Nursing and "A Teaching with Technologies Course: More than Teaching on the Web" at the American Nursing Informatics Association. She has recently served on the National League for Nursing Task Group on Educator Competencies. Additionally she is completing funded educational research from the National League for Nursing specific to online course teaching strategies.
