Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Admission Process

The deadlines for receipt of completed applications are December 1st for summer semester and September 1st for the spring semester (only if space is available). Although most students will begin during a summer session, applications are reviewed twice a year in case some students need to enroll in prerequisite courses. Approximately eight weeks should be allowed for this two-stage process.

First Stage

All applicants must submit:

  • Graduate application form (Domestic or International),
  • Apply online,
  • $50 application fee,
  • official transcripts of all academic work taken toward the bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing,
  • Graduate Record Examination aptitude scores,
  • references from three doctorally prepared individuals who are able to attest to the applicant's ability to engage in scholarly activity (At least one reference should be from the applicant's nursing program.)
  • a statement of career goals and research interests,
  • A CV following specific guidelines included in the application packet
  • evidence of current licensure as a professional nurse in one state. (may be waived if the person is an international student who will not be engaging in patient care while in the program)

The Admissions Committee of the School of Nursing will review the materials submitted as a part of the application.

Second Stage

As a result of the Admissions Committee initial review of the applications, certain candidates will be selected to progress to the second stage of the review. These candidates will be contacted by e-mail and asked to respond in writing to a specific set of questions. A very short time frame will be allowed for the receipt of the responses. The responses will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee and candidates will be informed of the decisions of the Committee as soon as possible.

BSN to PhD Program

Students can apply to the doctoral program after completing the baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing. The post-baccalaureate entry option is for exceptionally well-qualified BSN graduates whose career goals are research oriented and who wish to progress as rapidly as possible toward the doctorate degree in nursing.

Post-Baccalaureate Entry Option

Students entering the doctoral program through the post-baccalaureate entry option complete a minimum of 72 credit hours, including dissertation. Students do not necessarily earn a master's degree. However, students who want a clinical focus for their research may develop their program around an advanced practice focus, complete the MS degree and seek ARNP status.

Empirics 17 cr.

Leadership in Nursing 13 cr.
