Post-Bachelor's Doctor of Nursing Practice

Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner
Advanced Practice Major

The DNP – Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner curriculum focuses on the knowledge and skills required to educate advanced practice nurses to provide primary health care to a culturally diverse population of adults. The Adult/Gerontological nurse practitioner focuses upon assessment and management of common acute and chronic health care problems of adult and older adult patients in the primary care setting.  Nurses are educated for practice that is evidence-based, collaborative, and reflective of an understanding of current health care delivery, as well as economic, ethical, and professional issues.

Upon completion, graduates are eligible to sit for national certification examinations and to apply for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.

Clinical practice sites are generally located in the Kansas City metropolitan area, but may extend across the state of Kansas and other communities where students are located. A variety of settings are utilized: family practices; occupational health clinics; home health services; rural clinics; and other adult and geriatric sites. Please review the preceptor process for more information.

The Adult/Gerontological NP curriculum requires 75 credit hours of coursework. The majority of required courses are available online, although the entire program is not fully available in a distance education format. Attendance on campus at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City is required for the following courses: NRSG 810, NRSG 862, NRSG 864, NRSG 865 and NRSG 867.
