		February 10, 1999 For more information contact the KU School of Nursing's public relations coordinator KU School of Nursing Students Gain "Real World" Experience at Local Agencies KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Senior year nursing students at the University of Kansas School of Nursing are learning about the "real world" of nursing practice at area hospitals, clinics and health care agencies. Through a preceptor model of learning, the KU School of Nursing’s professional practicum provides students with opportunities to synthesize and integrate previous learning experiences. For the entire spring semester, each student works with a nurse who serves as a preceptor-instructor throughout the clinical experience. Concepts of leadership and management, change, and therapeutic nursing interventions are integrated into practice. The experience focuses on individualized transition to the professional nursing role as an employee, recognizing the organizational, social, political, economic, ethical and legal contexts in which interdisciplinary health care is delivered in a selected clinical setting. "These clinical experiences are an important part of our students professional preparation and development, " said David Martin, RN, MN, clinical assistant professor and coordinator of the professional practicum. "They give students an opportunity to witness what they've learned in the classroom in a real-world setting." The semester-long format is the result of an undergraduate curriculum change that took place in 1997. Previously, senior nursing students rotated through seven-week clinical experiences during which they would work 16 hours per week with preceptors. In the new format, students spend 24 hours a week for the entire semester at one of 18 health care organizations. In the seven-week course, students were limited to one of three sites and were unable to work in intensive care settings due to a conflict with student placements from another class. Students now have a more diverse list of sites to choose from including home health agencies, public schools, long term care centers, community health clinics and hospitals. The success of the new format can be judged partly on the reaction from area health care organizations. Developing the new practicum format required course organizers to identify 80 to 90 new openings for their students. While the first year required cold calls to area health care organizations, this year Martin received requests from area agencies that had heard about the program.
