Since joining the KU School of Nursing faculty in 1992, Sharon Kumm has taught a variety of courses including clinical and lecture courses in assessment, nursing of adults, and complex acute nursing. In addition to past positions in critical care, Kumm also spent seven years as a traveling nurse, during which time she "learned that good nursing care occurs across the U.S."

Kumm, who received a diploma in nursing from Research Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, MO, received her master's in nursing with a physiological focus from the University of Washington in Seattle. She also holds a bachelor's degree in biology and a second master's degree in molecular biology.
