Species: Mouse
Tissue: Monocyte-macrophage
ATCC: ATCC TIB-71 RAW 264.7 (Monocyte-macrophage, mouse) Passage Frozen: Unknown. Current medium for propagation: Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium, 90%; FBS, 10%. Additional Information: This line was established from the ascites of a tumor induced in a male mouse by the intraperitoneal injection of Abelson leukemia virus (A-MuLV). RAW 264.7 will pinocytose neutral red, phagocytose zymosan and latex beads, and secrete lysozyme. These cells are capable of antibody-dependent lysis (ADL) of both sheep erythrocyte and tumor targets in contrast to WEHI-3 (ATCC TIB-68) which exhibits little activity toward either target. Incubation of these cells with LPS or PPD for 2 days resulted in a significant increase in ADL of sheep erythrocytes, although there was no stimulation of erythrocyte phagocytosis nor in nonspecific lysis or ADL of tumor targets. Growth is inhibited by LPS (0.5 ng/ml). This line does not secrete detectable virus particles and is negative in the XC plaque formation assay. Cell surface characteristics include: Ig-, H-2d+, H-2b-, Thy-1.2-, Ia-. In addition, receptors for complement and immunoglobulin are present. References: J.
