The SIDDRC Histology Services are located in room 2037 of the KLSIC building. This 395 square foot room houses sample preparation areas, including a fume hood, and equipment for sample preparation for light and electron microscopy. The facility is supervised by a histology specialist, Jing Huang, who is responsible for maintaing all equipment, for training investigators and personnel in the use of the equipment. Huang also provides assistance in specialized tissue fixation, sectioning and staining procedures. Investigators have the option of either conducting procedures themselves or having Huang perform them.

The Histology laboratory is fully equipped for paraffin histology, including automated processing, embedding, sectioning and staining. Facilities are also available for the embedding and sectioning of frozen specimens.

 

For viewing sectioned material, the histology laboratory is equipped with dissecting and light microscopes including a Nikon Optiphot equipped for phase contrast and epifluorescence illumination, and a Nikon SMZ-1500 dissecting microscope for larger sections, also equipped with epifluorescence. An Optronics digital firewire CCD color camera is mounted for image capture.
