Configuring Password Protection on 7000 Series Blackberries
  1. On the main screen, use the scroll wheel to move over to the "Options" icon. As shown in Figure 1, this icon looks like a wrench on the 7200 and up series Blackberries or a Swiss Army knife on older Blackberry devices.

  1. Select the "Options" icon by pressing the scroll wheel.  The Options menu will be displayed as shown in Figure 2.

  1. Scroll to "Security" and select the Security option by pushing in the scroll wheel.  The Security menu will be displayed as shown in Figure 3.

  1. The "Password" field should be highlighted for you.  Press in the scroll wheel to access the Change Option menu as shown in Figure 4.

  2. Scroll to "Change Option" on the menu and press in the scroll wheel to select it.

  1. Use the scroll wheel to change the "Password" field to "Enabled" and then press in the scroll wheel once to select it.  An example is provided in Figure 5.

  1. Now use the scroll wheel to move to the "Security Timeout" setting.

  2. Press the scroll wheel to select the "Security Timeout" option and display the available times (see Figure 6.). This setting controls the amount of time that the Blackberry will remain unlocked when it is not being used.  For example, if you select "10 minutes", then the Blackberry will lock itself and require a password for use after it has been idle and unused for 10 consecutive minutes.

  1. Use the scroll wheel to highlight the desired timeout interval.  If your Blackberry will be used to store or access sensitive information, you must select "20 minutes" (or a lower setting such as 10 minutes).

  2. Press in the scroll wheel once to select the highlighted setting.

  3. Press in the scroll wheel to access the "Change Option" menu again.

  4. Use the scroll wheel to highlight the "Save" option and press in the scroll wheel to select it..

  5. As shown in Figure 7, you will be prompted to enter the password that you would like to use to logon to your Blackberry. Type in the password.

  1. Press in the scroll wheel to confirm the password.

  2. Retype the password to verify it.

  3. Click the scroll wheel once.  You have now successfully enabled password protection on your Blackberry.
