2006 Computer Security Awareness Week

November 13 - 17, 2006

The University of Kansas Medical Center is pleased to be hosting its first annual Computer Security Awareness Week  during the week of November 13 - 17, 2006.  The events comprising Computer Security Awareness Week at KUMC are designed to promote basic information security and privacy among all members of the University of Kansas Medical Center — students, staff and faculty - in a fun and informative way.

This year's theme is "Mission:Possible", which emphasizes that protecting yourself, your family, and your information online is attainable as long as you arm yourself with the knowledge and tools needed to do so.

We hope you'll join us and do just that!

Who should attend?

Anyone in the University community who owns and/or uses a computer connected to the Internet, which includes staff, faculty, students, and University affiliates.

Why attend?

"Security awareness" means understanding the various threats that exist in one's environment and taking reasonable steps to guard against them. Whether you're using a computer connected to the Internet from on or off campus, your computer is a target. Hackers are often looking for credit card numbers, bank account information and any other information they can use for their own gain. It's not just money-related information they're after; once they invade your computer, intruders can use it and your Internet connection to attack other computers.

What's happening?

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend one of our short presentations each day during Computer Security Awareness Week to learn more about protecting their computer and information.  (See the Schedule of Events page for detailed information on presentations and activities.)

  • Home Computer Security - spend a little bit of effort on a whole lot of security for your home PC and information

  • Protecting yourself and your family online - thinking about shopping for holiday gifts online or worried about who your son or daughter is chatting with on the Internet?  Learn how to take that worry out of your life.

  • Identity theft and email scams - how you can spot a scam and avoid being a victim.

  • Laptop and PDA Security - find out how to protect those little devices we carry around with us everyday.

  • Microsoft Vista - Microsoft talks about how their new operating system can make our lives easier.

  • HIPAA Security and Research - how HIPAA Security regulations affect research at KUMC

Additionally, there will be an online activity each day that will help you learn about various security topics.  We will be holding a raffle at the end of each day for great prizes, and you get an entry for each presentation you attend and each activity you complete!
