Our Philosophy
The goal of the University of Kansas Dietetic Internship Program is to produce registered dietitians with enhanced skills in nutrition therapy for health and education positions that will provide services for the citizens of Kansas, the region, the nation, and the world. The goals of our program are to:
Admit students with the desire and ability both to practice at an entry level and to perform graduate-level course work.
Conduct an efficient program that is individualized to meet the educational needs of students.
Train students to practice dietetics at the entry level and expose them to the advantages of a Master of Science in dietetics and nutrition.
Help students with appropriate career or education placement upon graduation.
The KU Dietetic Internship Program – At a Glance
The dietetic internship program has a nutrition therapy emphasis and consists of 1,000 hours of supervised practice experience in clinical nutrition, community nutrition, food and nutrition management, and a practice area of interest.
The program begins in late August and is completed by the end of July the following year.
There are more than 45 clinical education affiliations in the metropolitan Kansas City area and surrounding regions as well as opportunities for international experiences.
Dietetic internship program classes are scheduled on one week day for the fall and spring semesters.
Supervised practice experiences are scheduled 32 hours per week in the fall and spring semesters and from 24 to 40 hours per week for the practice area of interest experience during the summer session.
A graduate certificate from the University of Kansas is awarded at the end of the summer session after successful completion of the 24 hours of graduate credit.
Students are strongly encouraged to earn a Master of Science degree in dietetics and nutrition upon completion of the dietetic internship program. Degree-seeking students in the graduate certificate program may transfer 14 hours toward the master’s degree, which can be completed in two additional semesters and requires a total of 30 to 33 credit hours.
