Harry Hynes, MD, PhD, professor of internal medicine, was elected to the board of directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Feb. 18.

Richard Gilmartin, MD, clinical associate professor of pediatrics, presented "Use of Continuous Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy for Spasticity" during pediatric grand rounds Feb. 25 at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine, Tulsa, and Feb. 26 at Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston.


News from the School of Nursing

Helen Connors, RN, PhD, associate professor and associate dean of academic affairs, gave the keynote address at the 15th annual International Nursing Informatics Conference March 17. This conference, presented in Atlantic City, N.J., was a continuing education program sponsored by Rutgers College of Nursing.

A chapter on weight management by Sue Popkess Vawter, RN, PhD, professor, was published in Core Curriculum for Holistic Nursing, edited by Barbara Montgomery Dossey. This book is the official document used by nurses writing for certification by the American Holistic Nurses' Association.

Bethene Gregg, MS, RRT, assistant professor of respiratory care education, had several case studies on the Internet approved for Category 1 Respiratory Care continuing education units. An article, "Two Approaches to Grammar Facilitation in Children With Language Impairments:

Phase 2," by Marc Fey, PhD, professor of hearing and speech, was published in the Journal of Speech and Hearing, 40: 5-19. His co-authors were Pat Cleave, School of Human Communication Disorders, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Steven Long, department of communication sciences, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. Cleave and Fey are co-authors of "Two Approaches to the Facilitation of Grammar in Children With Language Impairments: Rationale and Description," which was published in the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology (1997), 6: 22-32.

Carol Gilmore, MS, RD, FADA, courtesy instructor of dietetics and nutrition, is co-author of "Determining Educational Preparation Based on Job Competencies of Entry-Level Dietetics Practitioners," which was published in the March 1997 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.


News from Graduate Studies and Research and the Research Institute

Nominations are being accepted for the Chancellors Club Research Award ($5,000), which honors a KU Medical Center faculty member (Kansas City and Wichita) who has demonstrated exceptional achievements in research. Past winners are not eligible. Nominations should be sent to A.L. Chapman, PhD, Office of Academic Affairs, 5015 Wescoe. The deadline is May 9.

Rosie Thompson, BSN, RN, burn nurse clinician, gave three presentations at the annual meeting of the American Burn Association March 19-22 in New York. She discussed "Preparing Children for Burn Center Visitation with a Video," "The Practice and Learn Box: A Fire Safety Activity," and "School Re-Entry Programs for Burn Survivor Children and Their Classmates."


News from the Kansas Cancer Institute

The next Kansas Cancer Institute Research Round Table "Journal Club" will be at noon April 1 in Lied Auditorium. Leslie Heckert, PhD, assistant professor of molecular and integrative physiology, will present "A Transcriptional Enhancer Required for the Differential Expression of the Human Estrogen Receptor in Breast Cancers." The paper, by Zuoqin Tang, Isabelle Treilleux, and Myles Brown, was published in Molecular Cell Biology (1997), 17(3): 1274-1279.

A poster presentation, "African American Nutrition Education Program: Prevention Is the Key," by Shelly Peterson, outreach manager in the Cancer Information Service, was accepted for display at the sixth biennial Symposium on Minorities, the Medically Underserved and Cancer April 23 in Washington.


News from the Center on Aging

The next Center on Aging Research Seminar will be from 4 to 5 p.m. April 1 in 5030 Robinson. Novella Perrin, PhD, director of the Gerontology Institute at Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, will discuss "Concerns of Adult Children with Aging Parents." Refreshments will be served.
