The next CenterNet conference will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 27 in Wahl West Auditorium. C. Everett Koop, MD, former surgeon general; David Heber, MD, University of California, Los Angeles; Gail Henderson, PhD, UCLA; George Bray, MD, Pennington Biomedical Research Center; and Thomas Wadden, PhD, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, will be on the panel for "Obesity: New Horizons and Clinical Challenges."
S.J. Enna, PhD, professor and chair of pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics, has been named to the Scientific Advisory Council at Abbott Laboratories. The council is responsible for reviewing the company's research activities and for advising management on the quality and direction of their programs.
Eleanor Sullivan, RN, PhD, FAAN, professor, has been named editor of the Journal of Professional Nursing, the official publication of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. This appointment will begin Jan. 1, 1998.
An article, "The Development of the Profession of Nursing in Kyrgyzstan," by David Martin, RN, MN, clinical assistant professor, Pat Wahlstedt, RN, MSN, assistant dean of continuing nursing education, and Louise Redford, RN, MA, KU Medical Center-Kyrgyzstan partnership coordinator, was published in the Winter 1997 issue of The Journal of Multicultural Nursing and Health.
Lin Bian, MD, doctoral student in audiology; Mark Chertoff, PhD, assistant professor of hearing and speech; and Tim Steele, doctoral student in audiology, presented a poster, "Predicting Cochlear Microphonic Distortion Using a Nonlinear Systems Identification Technique," at the Feb. 1-6 meeting of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology.
Tom Davis, CRNA, MAE, assistant professor of nurse anesthesia, presented "Distance Education: Is it Right for Your School" Feb. 23 at the Assembly of School Faculty of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
Tana Brown, OTR, MA, assistant professor of occupational therapy education, was elected chair of the mental health special interest section of the American Occupational Therapy Association. She recently published two articles: 1. "A Comparison of Living Situation and Loneliness for People With Mental Illness" in Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal, Fall 1996. 2. "The Daily Activities Checklist: A Functional Assessment for Consumers with Mental Illness Living in the Community" in Occupational Therapy in Health Care, Vol. 10, No. 3, with Edna Hamera, RN, PhD, associate professor in the School of Nursing, and Christin Hill, OTR, occupational therapy education graduate student.
Elizabeth Limos, University of the Philippines General Hospital (PGH), Manila, visited the department of dietetics and nutrition Feb. 10-14. Limos, a dietitian, was in the United States to attend the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition annual meeting in San Francisco. She visited KU Medical Center at the invitation of Marilyn Lucas, EdS, RD, associate professor of dietetics and nutrition and associate director for education, who was an invited visitor to PGH last year.
An article, "Test-Retest Reliability of Three Aphasia Tests: Performance of Non-Brain-Damaged Older Adults," by Jennifer Flanagan, former hearing and speech student, and Susan Jackson, PhD, assistant professor of hearing and speech, was published in the January/February issue of the Journal of Communication Disorders.
Patricia Pohl, PhD, PT, assistant professor of physical therapy education and an assistant scientist in the Center on Aging, was a lecturer at a preconference workshop, "Update in Neurologic Physical Therapy," at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association Feb. 11 in Dallas.
There are two upcoming Center on Aging Research Seminars. Both seminars will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Laszlo Stumpfhauser, PhD, director of the Center for Quality Care at the Larksfield Place Retirement Community, Wichita, will discuss "The Impact of a 10-Week-Long Training Program on 'Lower Extremity Function' and 'Fear of Falling'" Feb. 25 in 5026 Wescoe. Cynthia Teel, RN, PhD, assistant professor in the School of Nursing, will discuss "Caregiving with Stroke" March 4 in 5030 Robinson. Refreshments will be served at both seminars.
The Kansas Cancer Institute's next Research Round Table Seminar will be at noon March 4 in the Clendening Amphitheater. Ronald Blum, MD, medical director at St. Vincent's Comprehensive Cancer Center, New York, will be the speaker. Lunch will be provided for the first 35 attendees.
The KUMC Bookstore will be awarding up to 16 scholarships for the 1997-98 academic year. The awards, which will range from $400 to $600 each, are for academic achievement and exceptional community involvement. Full-time students at the Kansas City and Wichita campuses may apply by submitting an application form no later than March 15. Applications may be picked up at the KU Medical Center Bookstore or Student Union Bookstore at the Wichita campus. Scholarship award winners will be notified by May 15.
