The KU School of Medicine will host a reception for Jared Grantham, MD, in honor of his appointment as a University of Kansas Distinguished Professor. The reception will begin at

2:30 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Murphy Foyer. It will be followed by a presentation at 3:30 p.m. in the Clendening Amphitheater. At 4 p.m., Thomas Andreoli, MD, Nolan Professor and chair of internal medicine at the University of Arkansas College of Medicine, will present "Molecular Heterogeneity of Basolateral TAL Channels."

A candidate for senior associate dean for research and graduate studies for the School of Medicine, Andrzej Bartke, PhD, professor and chair of physiology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Carbondale, will present a seminar at 1 p.m. Jan. 8 in Wahl West Auditorium. He will discuss "Does Growth Hormone Prevent or Accelerate Aging?"

Joseph Maino, OD, clinical professor of ophthalmology, participated in the American Academy of Optometry meeting Dec. 11-15 in San Antonio. His lectures included "Macular Perimetry in the

Rehabilitation of Patients With Severe Visual Impairment" and "Application of Head-Mounted Displays in Low Vision Rehabilitation." He also presented a poster, "Use of the Manual Focus Beta 1 Low Vision Enhancement System by Veterans." Maino also was recently elected chair of the research and development committee at the Kansas City, Mo., Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Ronal MacGregor, PhD, professor of anatomy and cell biology, attended the 188th meeting of the Society for Endocrinology Nov. 24 and 25 in London. He presented "Parathyroid Cells in Monolayer and Organoid Culture" at a symposium on in vitro models of endocrine cell growth and differentiation. He also attended the 37th American Society for Cell Biology annual meeting Dec. 13-17 in Washington, where he presented a tutorial on "Reproducible Isolation of Rat Hepatocytes Using Elastase and Purified Bacterial Collagenase."

Teresa Long, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and assistant professor of internal Medicine, and Robert Twillman, PhD, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of psychosocial services at the KU Cancer Center, were initiated as fellows of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine at the organization’s recent annual meeting in San Diego.

Ronald Martin, MD, professor and chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, has been appointed chair of the committee on medical student education for the Council on Medical Education and Career Development for the American Psychiatric Association. His one-year tenure begins at the close of the annual meeting June 4, 1998. Martin also has been selected to join the American Psychiatric Association’s new Media Doctor-On-Call program. The program is designed to develop a relationship between a doctor and reporter so that the doctor can act as a resource -- accessible for insight on issues, basic information about mental illnesses and referrals to other psychiatric experts. Martin has been matched with Karen Shideler, health reporter with the Wichita Eagle-Beacon.

The health information management program has received notification that the graduating class from last year achieved a 100 percent passing rate on their national registry exam, which entitles the graduates to hold the credential RRA (Registered Record Administrator).

Janice Loudon, PhD, PT, ATC, SCS, assistant professor, and Stephania Bell, MS, PT, clinical assistant professor, both in physical therapy education, recently completed training for certification in orthopedic manual physical therapy through the Ola Grimsby Institute.

News from KU Hospital

Sana Conley, MTQM, CMSC, medical staff coordinator, has been elected president of the Kansas City Chapter of the National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS). Conley, who has been a member for about five years, has held the positions of treasurer, secretary and president-elect. Her one-year term begins Jan. 1, 1998. The independent, nonprofit, professional organization has more than 3,500 members who provide medical staff services. Formed in 1978, NAMSS promotes the continuous improvement of quality in health care by providing educational and professional development opportunities for its members. Its goal is to educate members regarding the changing health care industry and to provide and maintain an accredited certification program for members.

 

News from the Kansas Cancer Institute

The next Kansas Cancer Institute Research Round Table will begin at noon Jan. 6 in the Lied Auditorium. Opendra Narayan, DVM, PhD, professor of microbiology, molecular genetics and immunology, will present "Vaccine Prospects for HIV Using a New Macaque Model of AIDS."
