Harvey Fisher, PhD, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, attended the FY 1999 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Consensus Conference on Federal Research Funding in the Biomedical and Related Life Sciences Dec. 2-4 in Bethesda, Md. He serves as an ad hoc advisor for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Faculty from gastroenterology and hepatology are the co-authors of several abstracts presented at the 62nd annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology Nov. 3-5 in Chicago. KU faculty were co-authors of six abstracts with authors from the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, Charlottesville, and the Virginia Polytechnical Institute, Blackburg. "Cholipergic Blockade Inhibits Gastroesophageal Reflux and Transient Lower Esophageal Relaxations Through a Central Mechanism" by J.C. Fang, MD, Irene Sarosiek, MD, Y. Yamamoto, MD, J. Wilfred Arnold, PhD, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, presented "Vincent van Gogh: Chemicals, Crises, and Creativity" to the American Chemical Society, Greater Kansas City Chapter, Dec. 17.

Teresa Long, MD, assistant professor of psychiatry and internal medicine, was first author on a poster presentation at the 16th annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society Oct. 23-26 in New Orleans. The poster, "Topical Opioids for Analgesia in Painful Skin Lesions," was co-authored by Robert Twillman, PhD, clinical assistant professor of psychiatry; David Mueller, RPh, supervisor of sterile products in the pharmacy department; and Teresa Cathers, EdS, research psychologist in the department of psychiatry.

Chukuka Enwemeka, PT, PhD, FACSM, professor and chair of physical therapy education, presented an invited symposium, "The Role of Laser Therapy in Tendon Repair," at the Dec. 2-4 Congress of the International Association for Laser and Sports Medicine in Tokyo.

News from the Kansas Cancer Institute

Sara Antonia Li, PhD, associate professor of pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics and a member of the Kansas Cancer Institute, presented a seminar, "Estrogen-Induced Mammary Tumors in the ACI Rat: A Model for Breast Cancer," Dec. 8 at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle. Sara Antonia Li and Jonathan Li, PhD, professor of pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics, professor of preventive medicine and director of the division of etiology and prevention of hormonal cancers at the Kansas Cancer Institute, are organizing the third International Symposium on Hormonal Carcinogenesis. The symposium will be Sept. 6-12, 1998, at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

News from International Programs and Telemedicine

Pam Whitten, PhD, director of telemedicine; Gary Doolittle, MD, medical director of telemedicine; and Michael Mingucci, associate director of international programs, were invited guests of the president of the Federal University of Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil, Dec. 3 and 5. At a one-day symposium, "Telemedicine in Brazil," which included presentations by faculty from the University of Pernambuco and the Medical College of Georgia, Whitten and Doolittle spoke on the educational and technological aspects of telemedicine and telemedicine services in Kansas, respectively. Ace Allen, MD, also participated in the symposium via video conference. During the video conference, Executive Vice Chancellor Donald Hagen, MD, greeted Mozart Ramos, president of the university. Following the conference, Whitten, Doolittle, Ramos and Brazil’s minister of education signed an agreement to pursue telemedicine evaluation project funding for projects in Brazil and Kansas.

News from Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care will offer several Catholic and non-denominational services this month in Spencer Chapel. Catholic Advent Christmas season services will be: Christmas Eve Mass – 4:45 p.m. Dec. 24; Christmas Day Mass – 10 a.m. Dec. 25; New Year's Eve Mass – 4:45 p.m. Dec. 31; and New Year's Day Mass – 10 a.m. Jan. 1. Non-denominational services (All are welcome.) will be: Christmas Eve Communion Service – 6:30 p.m. Dec. 24. Anyone with hospital patients needing transportation to the Christmas Eve Communion Service may call ext. 5033.

Miscellaneous News

The next KU Medical Center Blood Drive will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 23 and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 24 in the Stoland Lounge. The area’s blood supply is very low and donations are critically needed. Those interested in donating may call Clinical Labs, ext. 1710, or may stop by the table outside the KU Hospital cafeteria to register. Walk-ins are welcome. T-shirts will be given to all registered blood donors.

Because of Christmas and New Year’s holiday breaks, the deadlines for the next two issues of Faculty Report have changed. The deadline for the Dec. 29 issue is noon Monday Dec. 22. The deadline for the Jan. 5 issue is noon Tuesday Dec. 30.
