This year’s Holiday Party will be from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 10 p.m. to midnight Dec. 17 in the KU Hospital cafeteria. All faculty, staff, students and volunteers are invited. The theme is "Winter Holidays Around the World." KU will again hold an ornament decorating contest. The deadline for ornament entries has been extended to 9 a.m. Dec. 16. Call ext. 1291 for entry rules. (Ornaments should to be turned into business and strategic development.) Also, the holiday party planning committee is hosting a Holiday Trivia Quiz. Quizzes will be available in both cafeterias the week of Dec. 15 and may be placed in the "presents" under the tree in the KU Hospital cafeteria. An entry from the day shift and the evening shift will be drawn at each party. (All entries, are eligible.)

The next CenterNet conference will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in 1025 Orr-Major. The topic will be "The Privacy of Electronic Medical Information: Will Our Medical Records Be Used to Heal Us or Reveal Us?" with Don Detmer, MD, senior vice president of the University of Virginia, Charlottesville; Janlori Goldman, deputy director of the Center for Democracy and Technology and visiting scholar at Georgetown University Law Center, Washington; and David Korn, MD, Association of American Medical Colleges.

R. Neil Schimke, MD. Twenty-five years: Marc Asher, MD, John Belmont, PhD, Norton Greenberger, MD, Jong Min Kim, MD, and George Pierce, MD. Twenty years: Solomon Batnitzky, MD, Allan Cooke, MD, Deanna Fox, MD, Glenn Hara, MD, Thelda Kestenbaum, MD, Bruce Kimler, PhD, Errol Levine, MD, Ronal MacGregor, PhD, John Neuberger, DrPH, Michael Parmely, PhD, Stanton Rosenthal, MD, Paul Terranova, PhD, George Varghese, MD, and James Voogt, PhD. Billy Hudson, PhD, professor and chair of biochemistry and molecular biology, served as a member of a review team on a biomedical graduate program for the Board of Regents of the state of Louisiana Dec. 1 and 2.

Kottarappat Dileepan, PhD, research associate professor of medicine, presented "Potentiation Effect of Mast Cell Granules on IL-6 and IL-8 Production by Endotoxin-Activated Human Coronary Artery Endothelial Cells" at the 32nd national meeting of the Society for Leuokocyte Biology

Dec. 4-7 in Baltimore. His co-authors are: Alex Jehle, medical student; Ann Stechschulte, medical student, Yuai Li, MD, research associate; and Daniel Stechschulte, MD, professor of medicine.

News from the School of Medicine-Wichita

Kay Albirght has been appointed director of university relations at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita. She most recently was editor of the Oread, a biweekly publication at the KU Lawrence campus. She has previously served as a public relations/marketing consultant, district news reporter, photographer, news editor and a director of public information. She also was director of university communications at Northern State University. She received her bachelor’s degree from Missouri Southern State College, Joplin, Mo., and her master’s from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Eleanor Sullivan, RN, PhD, former dean of the KU School of Nursing, recently was installed as the president of Sigma Theta Tau International, the nursing profession’s honor society.

News from the School of Allied Health

Several faculty from hearing and speech participated in the annual convention of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association Nov. 20-23 in Boston. John Ferraro, PhD, professor and chair, presented a case study in the session on "Grand Rounds in Audiology." He also chaired a workshop on "Middle Ear Physiology." Marc Fey, PhD, professor, co-authored five poster presentations and was a co-presenter in two special sessions: "The Relationship Between Speech and Language Impairments in Children" and "Publishing in ASHA Journals: A Partnership of Author and Editor." Susan Jackson, PhD, assistant professor, and Kimberly Hammer, MA, former student, presented a poster, "Prospective Memory in Normal Aging." Sara Dale Brandt, PhD, adjunct assistant professor and director of rehabilitation services, served as a legislative councilor for the state of Kansas.

News from the Kansas Cancer Institute

The Kansas Cancer Institute will sponsor a lecture from noon to 1 p.m. Dec. 18 in Lied Auditorium. Peter Nelson, MD, department of medicine and molecular biotechnology at the University of Washington, Seattle, will discuss "The Cellular Transcriptome as a Biological Assay: Implications for Cancer Diagnostics in the 21st Century."

News from the Center on Aging

John Belmont, PhD, professor of pediatrics, will present "Effects of Feedback on Age-Related Performance Differences" at the Dec. 16 Center on Aging Research Seminar. The lecture will be from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Clendening Amphitheater.

News from Human Resources

Gov. Bill Graves has declared Dec. 26 as an additional state holiday for 1997. This day is considered a holiday for all state employees. Compensation for this holiday should be handled the same as for other state holidays. Those with questions about holiday compensation or credit should contact payroll or human resources for information.

News from the Chaplains Office

A Candlelight Caroling Service, a non-denominational celebration with carols and Scripture readings, will be held from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Dec. 17 in the Spencer Chapel.
