Jeffrey Johnson, PhD, assistant professor of pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics, received a new, three-year $195,000 total costs grant for "Brain Glutathione S-Transferases and NAD (P) H: Quinone Oxidoreduction: A Role in Preventing Neurotoxicity" from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
Lance Miller, PhD, research assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was awarded a new, one-year $33,500 total costs grant from the Department of Health and Human Services for "Hormonal Regulation of Macrophage iNOS and TNF Genes."
Jane L. Murray, MD, professor and chair of family medicine, received a new, three-year grant. She was awarded $853,200 total costs for "Establishment of Departments of Family Medicine" from the Department of Health and Human Services.
James Calvet, PhD, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, received a new, 17-month $75,000 total costs grant from the Polycystic Kidney Research Foundation for "Polycystin Function in Normal and PKD Cells."
Rebecca Horvat, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was awarded a new, 26-month grant from bioMerieux Inc. She received $16,306 total costs for the "Vitek II Gram-Negative Antibiotic Susceptibility Study."
Joseph Kanarek, MD, clinical associate professor of pediatrics, received a new, one-year $19,991 total costs grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for the "Cystic Fibrosis Center Grant."
Hideaki Nagase, PhD, professor, and Carolyn Rankin, PhD, research assistant professor, both in biochemistry and molecular biology, received a new $5,000 total costs grant. They were awarded $5,000 from Sankyo Co. Inc. for "Inhibitor Studies on Animals with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)."
Gregory Reed, PhD, associate professor of pharmacology, toxicology and therapeutics, was awarded a new, 4-year and one-month grant from the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity. He was awarded $191,732 total costs for "Estrogens, Microtubules, and Aneuploidy: Mechanisms of Mammary Gland Tumorigenesis."
Jerzy Sarosiek, MD, PhD, research professor of medicine and scientific director in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology, received a new, one-year $15,000 total costs grant from the American College of Gastroenterology for "Salivary and Esophageal Protective Factors in African-Americans and Caucasions: A Search for the Clue as to the Lower Prevalence of Esophagitis and Complications in African-Americans."
David Corley, MD, has joined the department of obstetrics and gynecology as an assistant professor in the division of reproductive endocrinology, effective July 21, 1997. He joins Daniel Stewart, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of the division. Corley earned his medical degree in 1987 from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. He served his residency at Portsmouth (Va.) Naval Hospital and recently completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at the University of Louisville, Ky. Corley, who served in the U.S. Navy from 1987 to 1995, has received the Navy Achievement Medal from Charleston Naval Hospital and Guantanamo Bay Naval Hospital. From 1994 to 1997, he was a clinical instructor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical University of South Carolina and then at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. A fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, he specializes in laparoscopy, microsurgery and assisted reproductive technology.
The health and safety of the entire agriculture sector is the goal of a joint agreement just signed by KU Medical Center and Kansas State University, Mannhattan. The KU Medical Center-K-State agromedicine program will address the needs of farm and ranch families, agricultural workers, ag-related industries and consumers of ag-related products. The cooperative program will include research, teaching and service. It allows Kansas to become the 16th state in the North American Agromedicine Consortium. The universities plan to host the National Agromedicine Consortium Congress in May 1998. John Neuberger, DrPH, associate professor of preventive medicine at KU Medical Center, and Jon Rolf, K-State, facilitated the discussions that led to the agreement.

Douglas Woolley, MD, associate professor of family and community medicine, received a new, three-year $334,800 total costs grant from the Department of Health and Human Services for "Grants for Predoctoral Training in Family Medicine."

Sharon Summers, RN, PhD, associate professor, has been notified that she passed the American Nurses Credentialing Center family nurse practitioner certification examination. This is the testing division of the American Nurses Association.
David Martin, RN, MN, clinical assistant professor, will conduct a class at the School of Nursing in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Aug. 19 to Sept.15. The class will cover curriculum revision, educational techniques and leadership development
News from the School of Allied Health
Marc Fey, PhD, professor of hearing and speech, was the keynote speaker at a conference of the South African Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Capetown July 25. He presented two talks: "Effects and Non-effects of Two Approaches to Grammar Facilitation in Preschoolers" and "Enhancing the Effects of Preschool Language Intervention by Anticipating Later Problems in School."
Debra Galvin Cook, MS, OTR, assistant professor of occupational therapy education, served as a primary reviewer at a grant review session of the Maternal and Child Health Bureau Aug. 12-13 in Washington.
News from KU Hospital
Beginning Aug. 18, the department of hospital information systems will move from its offices in Robinson and Wescoe to the basement of KU Hospital in room B430. The hospital information systems help desk will be the last section relocated to the new area. During the relocation, help desk calls will be answered, but the department requests callers to limit the number of non-critical calls during the move.
News from the Kansas Cancer Institute
The next Kansas Cancer Institute Research Round Table, hosted by the KCI and the Center for Reproductive Sciences, will be at noon Aug. 19 in Lied Auditorium. Maura Pieretti, PhD, department of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, will discuss "Molecular Genetic Studies of Ovarian Cancer."
News from the Center on Aging
Randolph Nudo, PhD, associate professor of molecular and integrative physiology and associate director of research in the Center on Aging, presented a lecture, "Effects of Rehabilitative Training on Motor Recovery After Ischemic Infarct" at the American Psychological Association Convention Aug. 18 in Chicago. He also received a 14-month $53,625 total costs transfer grant from the American Heart Association (national) for "Functional Remodeling of Motor Cortex Following Cortical Ischemia."

William Barkman, MD, MSPH, associate professor of medicine in the Center for Environmental and Occupational Health, received a new, two-year and three-month grant. He was awarded $8,500 total costs from the Mid-America Coalition on Health Care for the "Workers Compensation Project."

David Calkins, MD, MPP, associate dean for primary care and acting associate dean for medical education, was awarded a new, three-year, $360,775 total costs grant from the Department of Health and Human Services for "Faculty Development in General Internal Medicine/General Pediatrics."

The outreach aircraft office has moved from its offices in Hinch to Building 48. The new address is 4125 Rainbow, room 1044. The phone numbers for both Carol Philo, ext. 1451, and Kathleen Carroll, ext. 1452, remain the same. The fax number has changed to ext. 5228.
