H. Clarke Anderson, MD, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, presented the keynote lecture at the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Institute of Orthopaedics June 5 and 6 at the Royal National Orthopaedics Hospital, Stanmore, London. He discussed "New Research in Orthopaedic Pathology."

 

David Meyers, MD, professor of internal medicine and preventive medicine, presented a paper, "The Effect of Antioxidant Multivitamins on the Incidence of Vascular Events," at the fourth International Conference on Preventive Cardiology June 2 in Montreal.


News from the School of Medicine-Wichita

Charles Allred, MD, residency director of the family practice residency program at Smoky Hill, Salina, was elected secretary of the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians.

 

Larry Anderson, MD, clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine, has been elected to a five-year term with the American Board of Family Practice. He has been a preceptor at his Wellington family practice office for 20 years.


News from the School of Nursing

The offices of the School of Nursing dean and student affairs have moved from their offices in Taylor to 1070 Delp. Other administrative and faculty personnel still occupy offices in Taylor.

 

Roma Lee Taunton, RN, PhD, professor, has been appointed interim associate dean for research. Her appointment is from July 1, 1997, to June 30, 1998.

 

Several faculty are among the authors of "Effects of Exercise on Fatigue, Aerobic Fitness, and Disease Activity Measures in Persons With Rheumatoid Arthritis," which was published in Research in Nursing and Health, 20,195-204. The authors are Geri Neuberger, RN, EdD, associate professor at the
School of Nursing; Allan Press, PhD, associate professor at the School of Social Welfare, KU, Lawrence; Herbert Lindsley, MD, professor of medicine; Ruthellyn Hinton, professor of nursing
at Pittsburg State University; Perri Cagle, MS, PT, assistant professor of physical therapy education; Kathereine Carlson, Fairway; Steven Scott, RN, MSN, CCRN, Mary Grimes School of Nursing, Neosho County Community College, Chanute; Judy Dahl, RN, MSN, assistant professor of nursing at William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo.; and Beth Kramer, RN, MSN, an advanced practice nurse in Alvin, Texas.

The department of biometry has moved from their offices in Hinch to G034 Olathe Pavilion.


News from the Office of Primary Care

David Calkins, MD, MPP, associate dean for primary care and executive director of Primary Care Physician Education, received a Primary Care Fellowship Program Award from the Bureau of Health Professions, a division of the Health Resources and Services Administration. He was awarded a new, three-year $360,775 grant for "Faculty Development in General Internal Medicine/General Pediatrics."


News from the Kansas Cancer Institute

Carol Fabian, MD, professor of medicine in the division of clinical oncology and medical director of the KU Cancer Center, received a new, $15,000 grant from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for "Free to Know — Public Education and Outreach." The Comprehensive Breast Center, in conjunction with the KU Cancer Center and family medicine, is a provider for the "Free to Know" program sponsored by the Kansas Breast and Cervical Cancer Initiative. The program pays for mammograms, clinical breast exams, Pap smears and pelvic exams for women 50 and older who meet income screening guidelines. The grant will be used to support educational materials and data entry. Jennifer Klemp, high-risk and prevention coordinator at the KU Cancer Center, will assist Fabian.


News from University Relations

University relations is scheduled to move July 16. That also is the deadline day for the July 21 Faculty Report. If the move goes as scheduled, Faculty Report won’t be published July 21. If the move is delayed, a subsequent issue won’t be published.
