The annual joint School of Medicine Faculty Retreat will be Sept. 12 and 13 at the Corporate Woods Doubletree Hotel, 10100 College Blvd., Overland Park. Deborah Powell, MD, executive dean of the School of Medicine, will appoint a planning committee for the retreat in the next few weeks. For more information, e-mail Jo Halverson at jhalvers or call her at ext. 5274.

The executive committee has moved its meeting date to the first and third Monday of each month. The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. July 7 in G567 KU Hospital at the Kansas City campus and in the Wichita Room at the Wichita campus.


News from the School of Medicine-Kansas City

Sally Camper, PhD, associate professor of human genetics at the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, will present, "Developmental Genetics of the Pituitary Gland" at 11 a.m.
July 10 in the Clendening Amphitheater.

Mark Noble, MD, associate professor of surgery, was elected chair-elect of the faculty council and James Fishback, MD, associate professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, was elected vice chair-elect. In September, Noble and Fishback will take their positions as chair and vice-chair, respectively.

Carol Lindsley, MD, professor and interim chair of pediatrics, has been appointed by the American Board of Pediatrics to the residency review committee in pediatrics of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Her three-year term will begin Jan. 1, 1998.

Donald Belsito, MD, professor of medicine and director of dermatology, presented "The Molecular Basis of Contact Dermatitis" at the 19th World Congress of Dermatology, which was held June 15-20 in Sydney, Australia. As a visiting professor at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, on June 26, he delivered a lecture on "A Sherlockian Approach to Contact Dermatitis."

Sarah Johnston, MD, associate professor, and Lawrence Pelletier Jr., MD, professor, both of medicine, published "Enhanced Hepatotoxicity of Acetaminophen in the Alcoholic Patient: Two Case Reports and a Review of the Literature" in Medicine 1997; 76(3):185-1990.


News from the School of Nursing

Betty Smith-Campbell, RN, PhD, assistant dean of practice and community affairs, will give a presentation to faculty and students from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. July 7 in Taylor Auditorium. She will discuss "Access to Health Care: Effects of a Kansas State Policy in One County." A reception will immediately follow in Taylor Auditorium.

Nancy Hoffart, RN, PhD, associate professor, has been named academic coordinator of nursing systems/administration. She will be responsible for assigning teaching responsibilities for courses, facilitating systematic evaluation of courses and faculty, and promoting positive relationships between clinical agencies and the School of Nursing.

Khatab Hassanein, PhD, chair and professor, and Edward Brown, MS, teaching associate, both in biometry, are co-authors of "Estimation of Reliability When Times to Failure Follow the Rayleigh Distribution," which was published in the December 1996 issue of the Journal of Statistical Research.


News from the School of Nursing and the Medical Center Alumni Association

Two nursing students have been named recipients of KU Nurses Alumni Research Awards for 1997. Melissa Harber received the Masters Award for her proposal "The Effectiveness of Preoperative Usage of Acetaminophen to Manage Postoperative Pain in Pediatric Patients." Wanda Vaughn was awarded the PhD Award for her proposal "Selected Maternal, Family and Child Variables Associated with Maternal Childrearing Attitudes and Behaviors."


News from KU Hospital

Gail Harkness, RN, PhD, ARNP, program coordinator of the Crisis Stabilization Center, and Shaunda Irwin, social worker with the Johnson County Mental Health Center, presented "Partners in Emergency Mental Health Care: Challenging Traditional Boundaries" at the June 10 meeting of the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services in Vancouver, Canada.


News from the Office of Primary Care

Two physicians have joined the office of primary care as primary care fellows, which have recently been established in the office of primary care. Derek Williams, MD, joined the family medicine program, and Caroline Kim, MD, joined the general internal medicine/general pediatrics program. The two-year training programs are designed for graduates of primary care residencies who intend to pursue careers in academic medicine. Instruction includes master’s in public health coursework; research seminars; and workshops on teaching, patient care and leadership. The programs are partially supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration. Williams had been a family medicine resident at the Kansas City campus. In his faculty position, he will provide patient care, train residents and help coordinate the resident core conference. Kim had been a resident at the University of California-Los Angeles. Kim’s faculty position will be in the ambulatory division of general pediatrics. She will train medicine/pediatrics residents and treat patients with an emphasis in adolescent medicine. Those wanting additional information about the fellowships or those interested in being considered fellows for the next academic year should contact the office of primary care, ext. 1454.


News from the Kansas Board of Regents

The Kansas Board of Regents unanimously elected Robert Talkington, Iola, to serve as board chair for the next year. They also chose William Docking, Arkansas City, as vice chair. Talkington, appointed to the board in 1995, is a senior partner with the Iola Law firm of Talkington and Clark, LLP. Docking also joined the board in 1995. He is president, director and chief executive officer of the Union State Bank in Arkansas City.
