Karen L. Miller, RN, PhD, FAAN, dean of the School of Nursing, has been named acting dean of the School of Allied Health, effective July 1. Lydia Wingate, PhD, resigned as dean of the School of Allied Health June 30. She will join the Primary Care Physician Education initiative in the School of Medicine as an associate director.
Faculty, staff, students and volunteers are invited to attend KUMC Night at the Royals
July 12 when the Kansas City Royals play the Chicago White Sox. The KUMC event, sponsored by the executive vice chancellor's office and the hospital executive offices, will begin with a barbecue tailgate party in Lot K of Kauffman Stadium at 5:30 p.m. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. An $8.50 ticket grants admission to the tailgate party and view-level seating. A Youth Parade and First Pitch Ceremony will kick off the game. Tickets will be on sale from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 30-July 3 and July 7-11 outside the hospitals main cafeteria.
News from the School of Medicine-Kansas City
Teresa Long, MD, has been named medical director of palliative care services in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences. After earning her bachelor of science in nursing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in 1976, she served in the U.S. Army as a surgical intensive care unit staff nurse and was an intensive care unit nurse at Bethany Medical Center and KU Medical Center. Long, who earned her medical degree from KU in 1989, is a major in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. She joined KU Medical Center in 1994 as an assistant professor and associate director of psychosocial services.
Debra Collins, MS, genetic counselor and clinical assistant professor of medicine, received a
$200,000 one-year renewal grant from the Department of Energy for the "Human Genome
Networking Project."

Sue Popkess Vawter, RN, PhD, professor, was a featured speaker during the June 16 Research Day, "Nursing Research Update: Holistic Nursing Practice," at St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. She discussed "Holistic Self-Care Model for Permanent Weight Management."
News from the School of Allied Health
Three physical therapy education faculty gave presentations at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine May 28-31 in Denver. Karen Nau, PhD, PT, assistant professor, presented a poster on "Blood Lactate Concentration and Perceived Exertion Differ After Equivalent Isokinetic Work at Three Velocities." Her co-authors are Eric Foster, Kristen Lindsey, Angela Pedrotti and Craig Summers, all recent graduates of the physical therapy program. Steve Figoni, PhD, associate professor, presented a poster on "Reliability of Questionnaire-Based Physical Activity Measures in Wheelchair Users With Paraplegia." He also chaired a research session on "Spinal Cord Injury." Janice Loudon, PhD, PT, ATC, assistant professor, presented a poster on "Submaximal Combined Arm and Leg Exercise Test for Young Women." Loudon also presented a platform presentation at the American Physical Therapy Associations national meeting June 1 in San Diego. She discussed "Cervical Variables Associated With Lateral Epicondylitis."

The Rev. Jerry Spencer, Catholic chaplain, was a participant at the fifth International Conference on Grief and Bereavement in Contemporary Society and the 27th annual meeting of the Association for Death Education and Counseling June 23-27 in Washington.
News from the Kansas Cancer Institute
The next Kansas Cancer Institute Research Round Table will be at noon July 8 in the Lied Auditorium. C. Marcelo Aldaz, MD, D Med Sci, associate professor at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, Smithville, Texas, will present "Genetic Characterization of Sporadic Human Breast Cancer."
News from the KU Endowment Association
A retired physician and his wife have given $45,000 for a new fellowship in medical humanities at the KU School of Medicine. Herlan and Marjorie Loyd of Carmichael, Calif., donated 23 acres of farmland near Salina worth about $45,000 to the KU Endowment Association.
The gift will support the Robert P. Hudson Fellowship in the Medical Humanities. Hudson is
a professor emeritus, endowment distinguished professor and Chancellors Club teaching professor of history and philosophy of medicine. The fellowship will provide support for graduate students in the medical humanities, which include history, philosophy of medicine and ethics. The Loyds, who are longtime KU supporters, also committed a $103,000 charitable trust in 1990 in unrestricted support to Campaign Kansas, a major fund-raising drive KU conducted from 1987 to 1992. Herlan Loyd is a retired hematologist and oncologist who earned a bachelors degree in 1935 and a medical degree in 1940 from KU. The gift will be administered by the KU Endowment Association.

News from Parking Services
The deadline to renew current parking permits and garage cards has been extended from
June 30 to July 3 because of the department's June 27 move to the support services facility. After July 3 parking services will sell unrenewed permits and cards to individuals on waiting lists. (Parking services will be closed for business June 30.) The office will open at its new location July 1. The phone number, ext. 5175, and business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, will remain the same.
Miscellaneous News
A blood drive will take place in Stoland Lounge in Orr-Major from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 1 and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 2. For an appointment call ext. 1711. All registered donors will receive a T-shirt. Walk-ins are also welcome.
