Pharmacy Residency Programs

The University of Kansas Hospital (KUH) is located in the heart of Kansas City, covering more than 50 acres of land with 35 buildings and over 5,000 employees. KUH provides inpatient care through 390 licensed inpatient beds and outpatient care through on-site and off-site ambulatory clinics. On average there are over 13,500 inpatient admissions and over 320,000 outpatient visits annually. Over 300 members of Kansas University Physicians Inc. (KUPI) and MidAmerica Cardiology Group-(MAC), along with a large number of medical fellows, residents and students make-up the medical staff of the hospital.

The department of Pharmacy includes a staff of six pharmacy administrators, 40 registered pharmacists, 40 pharmacy technicians and student interns, six pharmacy-practice management residents, two drug information residents, community practice resident and support personnel. Decentralized pharmacists and clinical services are supported by the optimal use of point-of-care technology and centralized medication distribution systems increased technician responsibility for medication distribution. Clinical services are provided to all areas of patient care with specialty service being provided to the medical intensive care, surgical intensive care, adult hematology/oncology, transplant, burn intensive care, general medicine, pediatric and neonatal patient care units.

The outpatient pharmacy dispenses approximately 40,000 prescriptions annually including discharge medications. Private and comprehensive patient counseling is emphasized for all patients receiving new and refill prescriptions. The use of automated prescription-filling technology (ScriptPro) has allowed pharmacists and technicians to dedicate more time towards patient care and customer service. Compliance monitoring and medication-assistance programs are other services currently being offered by the outpatient pharmacy.

The Drug Information Center is a resource to all the clinicians at KU Med and the state of Kansas and provides services contractually nationwide. The Drug Information Center also contributes to the Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee as well as several other medication utilization committees at the hospital. Drug Information specialists, Drug Information Residents and Pharm.D. students on clinical clerkships maintain the center.

The Department of Pharmacy also houses the Mid-America Poison Control Center (MAPCC), which is a public and clinician resource for the entire state of Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area. MAPCC responds to over 32,000 calls annually.

The department of Pharmacy maintains a strong relationship with the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy, with staff clinicians and residents precepting students on clerkships. The Pharmacy Practice faculty is based on-site and collaborates with the department on a variety of pharmaceutical care issues. The faculty also serve as preceptors and mentors to the residents of KU Med.
