Community Pharmacy Practice Residency
Community Pharmacy Residency Program Description
The University of Kansas (KU) School of Pharmacy, in affiliation with Hen House Pharmacy offers this ASHP/APhA Accredited Community Pharmacy Residency Program. The program was established in July 2001; it spans 53 weeks from the last week of June through June 30th the following year. The resident will be employed by Balls Foods Stores. Hen House pharmacists precept students from area schools of pharmacy throughout the year which allows the resident to interact with students. There is also the opportunity for didactic teaching at the KU School of Pharmacy. The staffing requirement is one day per week and the resident is required to complete a practice based residency project and prepare a manuscript for publication. The learning objectives for this residency include those outlined in the ASHP/APhA Accreditation Standard for Community Pharmacy Residency Programs.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to develop ambassadors of change who can integrate the pharmaceutical care of tomorrow into today’s dispensing practice of pharmacy. The program will help pharmacists develop the necessary skills and motivation to create and manage viable disease management programs as well as educate patients, other health care providers and future practitioners. The pharmacists will also keep current in the developments of pharmacy, actively participate in professional organizations, and demonstrate commitment to the profession.
Residency Program Goals Experiences · To develop, implement, and market pharmaceutical care programs · To engage in practice-based research · To refine skills in communications, patient care, health and wellness promotion, practice management, marketing and compensation strategies, and technology · To provide the resident with skills necessary to prosper professionally in a competitive health care system · To mentor pharmacy students · To develop necessary skill to own or manage a community pharmacy
Residency Program Experiences
Experiences include but are not limited to: · Participation in the diabetes, smoking cessation, hypertension and immunization programs · Participation in the KU Medical Center Atherosclerosis and LDL Apheresis Center · Prepare and present didactic lectures for the KU School of Pharmacy · Precepting Pharm.D. students · Prepare monthly newsletter article
Application Process
Resident Qualifications · Graduate of an accredited school or college of pharmacy · Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Kansas · Highly self motivated, dedicated to advancing the pharmacy profession, and display an interest in promoting pharmaceutical care in the community pharmacy setting
