Position Description

The postdoctoral fellow will have the unique opportunity to work and live in a truly multicultural environment, while providing a full-range of services typical of a university setting.

The Postdoctoral fellow will provide:

• Brief and longer-term individual psychotherapy to a diverse range of primarily U.S.-born students as they pursue their degrees in veterinary medicine;
• Psycho-educational and process-oriented group counseling;
• Program development and outreach programming;
• Consultation and training regarding student mental health concerns to an international faculty and primarily Kittitian staff;
• Crisis intervention and on-call services.

Depending on individual interests, opportunities may also exist for candidates to engage in community outreach and research activities that will expand multicultural knowledge and sensitivity, or engage in a variety of administrative functions.

Postdoctoral fellows will receive training and supervision designed to prepare them for a broad range of roles within a university counseling center, in addition to meeting all requirements for licensure in most states (1,750 hours). An extension of the fellowship may be considered in order to accommodate licensing requirements in other locations. Postdoctoral fellows will receive four hours of individual and group supervision per week with a U.S. licensed doctoral-level psychologist.

The stipend for the postdoctoral fellowship year is U.S. $45,000. U.S. citizens may qualify for the foreign earned income tax exclusion. Residing in a furnished apartment on the RUSVM campus is required to provide support during on call or emergencies. Up to U.S. $4,000 in relocation costs to/from St. Kitts will be paid by RUSVM. Fellows will receive the same health and dental insurance benefits as regular, full-time faculty. Fellows will have access to all university facilities including the library and fitness center. Fellows will receive 30 days of paid time-off per year (including vacation, sick days, and holidays).

Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for the postdoctoral positions must be from an APA-accredited clinical psychology or counseling psychology doctoral program and have completed all degree requirements prior to commencement of fellowship. Selections for these positions are made without discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, or veteran’s status.

Desired Qualifications

University Description
The 50-acre RUSVM campus overlooking the Caribbean is a student-focused environment with all the teaching, learning, and laboratory facilities needed for efficient learning. One of the most exciting parts of life at RUSVM is the campus community; currently there are approximately 925 enrolled students and 100 faculty. Students, faculty and staff are drawn from an amazingly diverse group of people. The variety of cultures, personalities, languages and lifestyles that one encounters both on campus and in the St. Kitts community make life at RUSVM and on the island both uniquely rewarding and challenging.

Region Description
St. Kitts is located in the Leeward Islands at the northern end of the Lesser Antilles, approximately 220 miles southeast of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Together with her sister island, Nevis, they constitute the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis, an English-speaking member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The name St. Kitts is short for St. Christopher, the name reputedly given by Christopher Columbus when he first passed through the Caribbean in the 1490s. A volcanic island, St. Kitts is lined by stunning windswept beaches: the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Caribbean to the west. Cooled by trade winds, St. Kitts enjoys an average temperature of just under 80ºF. Due to its abundant forests, fresh water, and fertile, easily worked soil, St. Kitts attracted European settlers and, in 1623, became Britain’s first colony in the West Indies. The culture of St. Kitts combines elements from Africa, Europe and native America. St. Kitts and its sister island, Nevis, gained independence from Britain in 1983, however, British influence is still strongly evidenced in many local customs, including driving on the left and enthusiasm for cricket.
