$3,846 – $5,279 per month/commensurate with experience
The primary focus of the incumbent will be to provide clinical mental health services to the student body of Sam Houston State University. Direct clinical services include individual, couples, and group therapy as well as crisis intervention. Indirect clinical services include outreach presentations, campus/community consultation, and supervision of trainees.
Staff members are encouraged to develop an area of specialty related to their practice, with funds available for continuing education and training.
All service provision is bound by the Rules of Practice set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Doctorate degree in psychology required. Minimum of one year experience delivering mental health services in a clinical setting required; university counseling center setting preferred. Licensed or license eligible in the State of Texas. License must be obtained within 18 months of start date. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Team player with the ability to work with a diverse student population. Clinicians with an interest in outreach, sexual-assault prevention, veterans, or working with students from underserved and or under-represented populations would be strongly encouraged to apply.
Sam Houston State University is a rapidly growing institution that has a current enrollment of approximately 18,500 students. It is located in Huntsville, TX, a small city of 34,500 residents between Houston and Dallas. Because of its proximity to two major metropolitan areas,SHSU’s student body is rich in all aspects of diversity.
The SHSU Counseling Center is a rapidly growing department, with a commitment from the university for continued growth in the future. To that end, during the Fall semester of ’12 the student body voted to provide funds for a new Student Counseling & Health Center. This facility is currently under construction and will be open in time for the Fall semester of ’14. Once opened, the Counseling Center will be able to expand the depth and breadth of its services in a variety of exciting ways.
Although it is only 70 miles from downtown Houston, Huntsville is surrounded by forests, lakes and ranch lands. Huntsville State Park and Sam Houston National Forest are both nearby. Each year, visitors from all over the state come to Huntsville, home and burial place of General Sam Houston, "Texas’ Greatest Hero," and the General Sam Houston Folk Festival. Huntsville’s "Fair on the Square" offers a day of fun, shopping, and food in its historic downtown area. Downtown is home to antique stores, galleries, shops and museums.
