The purpose of the postdoctoral fellowship is to provide advanced training for those who have completed a psychology internship in a college or university counseling center or a similar agency. The postdoctoral experience requires participants to be involved in the full range of psychological activities that professional staff members engage in and it also allows for the development of specialized skills in areas that relate to counseling center work. While there are required activities (individual counseling, intake assessments, and after-hours emergency coverage), fellows have the opportunity to work with a mentor/advisor in an area of professional interest. This work should involve the development of advanced skills and knowledge and can focus on research, clinical work, and outreach consultation. This is a full-time position, available August 12, 2014 through July 31, 2015. The salary is $33,150 plus basic student health insurance, dental coverage, and support for professional travel. Fellows have access to the University’s libraries, e-mail, Internet, recreational facilities, and cultural and athletic events.
Applications are invited from persons who will complete their doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology prior to the fellowship start date. The successful applicant should demonstrate a professional commitment and interest in university counseling center work and college student development.
A doctorate from an APA-approved psychology program and an APA-approved internship are preferred.
The University of Delaware is a state assisted institution, offering courses in a broad range of disciplines, including three associate’s programs, 146 bachelor’s programs, 119 master’s programs with 15 joint degrees offered within), and 58 doctoral programs. Fall 2012 enrollment totaled 21,856 which include 17,484 undergraduates, 3,654 graduates students, and 718 professional and continuing studies students.
First semester begins in September, the second in February; a five-week winter session intervenes. There are two summer sessions of five weeks each, and one of seven and one-half weeks duration.
The University is in Newark, a pleasant community of about 30,000. It is 14 miles from Wilmington, Delaware’s largest city and halfway between New York and Washington, D.C. Philadelphia is a one hour to the north and Baltimore, Maryland, one hour to the south. Delaware, New Jersey, and Maryland ocean beaches are less than two hours drive; the mountains of Maryland and Pennsylvania, which each offer four season activities including boating, hiking, and skiing, are within a few hours’ drive from campus.
