The Director provides overall leadership for Counseling Services, development and implementation of best practices for the Department; the Department offers programs and services to promote and enhance student success; ensure availability and effectiveness of 24-hour crisis intervention including on call services, the Director is included in the rotation; coordinate and collaborate with other divisions and departments to create and implement innovative outreach and informational programs; confer with other administrators, faculty, staff and others on matters relating to mental health issues and problems affecting all students and provide counseling to students, as appropriate to ensure collaborative, comprehensive and high quality services. The Director will also have his/her own client caseload.
The Director supervises staffing of four professional licensed counselors, with one or two post- doctorial fellows, and social work field placements as available. The staff provides individual and group counseling. Included in the staff are one administrative assistant and one contracted part-time consulting psychiatrist.
The Director will serve on various committees including but not limited to the Student of Concerns Team (SOC), SART, Dean’s Leadership Team, member of the Integrated Health Team, Orientation Committee and the Administrative Risk Assessment committee. S/he will provide clinical expertise and recommendations for student intervention, advise as to psychological and behavior signs, symptoms, and risk factors pertaining to student cases involving potential suicide, violence or serious psychological disturbance. The Director ensures that the provision of mental health services reduces barriers to learning and creates opportunities for greater academic achievement and student success. Vassar is committed to the creation of an integrated health model with active and full collaboration between the Office of Health Education, the Medical Health Clinic and the Psychological Counseling Services. The ultimate goal is to implement this integrated model in a single building. The Director will be key to the implementation of that model.
Successful candidates should possess a Doctorate Degree in a mental health field or MSW with at least 10 years of clinical setting experience; must currently hold a NY state license for professional practices in a mental health specialty field; five to seven years of administrative leadership; at least five years to seven years of full time supervisory experience of professional staff; Significant expertise in current and emerging college-age mental health issues with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with college-age populations, international students, students of color, underserved populations, parents, faculty and college administrators; proven experience developing consensus, talent for collaboration and team-building; the ability to maintain effective, trusting working relationships of mutual respect and honesty are essential; knowledge of legal, ethical and policy issues in college mental health and the ability to educate other professionals about these issues.
