Department of Student Health, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
The University of Virginia’s Department of Student Health seeks to hire a clinical case manager for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). CAPS’ primary mission is to respond to the mental health needs of students while providing consultation, education, outreach and crisis management to the broader University community. This is a full-time, university staff position with benefits.
The Case Manager:
-provides coordination of services for high risk students, including hospital liaison activities for students hospitalized psychiatrically.
-coordinates referrals for high risk students as well as for students having difficulties with the referral process; this includes liaison duties to the private practice community, the local community mental health center and other local mental health agencies.
-provides case management services to students exiting and returning to the university due to medical leave.
-provides individual therapy, group therapy, intake assessments and crisis evaluations.
-participates in CAPS’ day and night on-call system.
-provides outreach and consultation to the broader UVa community.
-exhibits skill and experience in working with high-risk populations and/or complex psychopathology.

Position requires a Master’s Degree in the Mental Health field and experience interfacing with community service boards and/or psychiatric treatment facilities; direct patient contact and support; crisis intervention experience; providing referral and/or case management support to psychotherapist and psychiatric staff.
Must have a mental health license in the state of Virginia or be license eligible in Virginia. Licenses would be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with a Master’s of Counseling.
Knowledge of mental health diagnoses and treatment; knowledge of mental health laws and systems.
Skills in conducting mental health evaluations and crisis intervention.
Abilities to remain calm in high stress situation and be flexible.
Learn and remain knowledgeable about local mental health systems and have skill in liaising with them. Excellent communication skills, both in communicating to mental health clinicians and University community members. Ability to manage several complex and/or high risk cases at a given time.
Detail oriented regarding medical record keeping consistent with current standards of care.
Specific experience within a community mental health or high volume/intensity university counseling center system is preferred.
CAPS’ primary mission is to respond to the mental health needs of students while providing consultation, education, outreach and crisis management to the broader University community. As a Center which offers the full continuum of outpatient mental health treatment, CAPS clinical staff is composed of 12 licensed psychotherapists including seven psychologists, three social workers, two professional counselor and four part-time psychiatric providers. In addition, CAPS has several therapists in training including psychology pre-doctoral interns, postdoctoral fellows, graduate psychology practicum students and psychiatry residents from the UVA residency program.
